“‘Play’ came about from me being in the studio and talking to my producer on how we can re-shake up the world with another follow-up after my latest single ‘Tetris,’” Derek King tell Hypebeast. “We wanted to bring the same type of vibe but in a different way, so we came up with flipping ‘I Need a Girl Part 2.’ My producer T Kelley did the beat and sent it over, and as soon as I heard the beat I had that melody in my head so I put it down.
