Hip-hop has been well represented in the year 2016, and it's always a beautiful thing to see that reflected in the end of year lists of the mainstream music publications. Beyoncé and Chance The Rapper both had incredible years, and their projects were essentially impossible for the world of rock music to ignore. Rolling Stone released their list of the "50 Best Albums of 2016" today. Here's where hip-hop stood on that list.

Vote: Who Had The Best Project Of September 2016? Oct 5, 2016 at 01:23pm
September 2016 is no more. It was a good month, a month that gave us much new music as we could handle. September 2016 saw the release of dozens of quality hip hop and R&B albums and mixtapes. We whittled these down to what we believe to be the twelve most significant releases of the month, and we want your help to decide which project was the absolute best. Here are the twelve:

On a dreary Monday night in September, Maxo Kream took the stage at Webster Hall's Grand Ballroom in New York City. It was the sixth show of his 41-date national tour with Danny Brown. The following afternoon, he came by the HNHH office joined by only one associate -- a spartan entourage compared to most artists.
Danny Brown's "Atrocity Exhibition" (Review)

Since blowing up with XXX in 2011, Danny Brown's enjoyed an odd sort of fame. He's become a huge mainstay in the summer music festival circuit thanks to turnt anthems like "Blunt After Blunt," "I Will," and the second half of Old, which was entirely composed of EDM-adjacent bangers. For Brown, who had been hustling for years prior (famously missing out on a G-Unit deal thanks to his skinny jeans), attracting hoards of party-ready college-age kids was a huge, unexpected career boost.

Earlier this year, HNHH launched a Spotify playlist called FIRE EMOJI: The Hottest Hip Hop Songs Right Now.  The playlist is updated on a daily basis. It lives on Spotify and thus is inherently imperfect, because not all super-hot hip hop songs have been added to Spotify. Still, the playlist is generally representative of the best new releases in hip hop and R&B.

By the good of graces of Jah, Danny Brown decided he couldn't wait any longer and dropped Atrocity Exhibition three days early. In addition to the overall greatness, one of the first things people noticed was an unexpected shot at Iggy Azalea on the album's final song, "Hell For It."

Danny Brown has been steady dropping snippets to promote his upcoming album. At this point, it's pretty safe to say that Atrocity Exhibition is going to be his most experimental body of work to date. Sunday afternoon, Brown shared yet another snippet, this time for a song called "Really Doe." It features a driving drum beat and a manic bell melody that meshes nicely with Brown's unhinged delivery. The song features Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul & Earl Sweatshirt, so buckle up.

Most Danny Brown fans got hooked around XXX ("Monopoly"!), but in truth Brown lived a full rap career before XXX ever came out. Between 2003 and 2010 he put together an eleven-project run that culminated in his 2010 free album The Hybrid.  Brown is 35 years old now and more popular than ever. With his album Atrocity Exhibition due out next month, now is an appropriate time to revisit the lesser-known stage of his career.
