So So Def is mounting a comeback. Label boss Jermaine Dupri has now spearheaded a few collabs with Da Brat over the last few months.
Big Brother x Lil Sister
Jermaine Dupri & Da Brat
Jermaine Durpi and Da Brat are preparing a mixtape called Business As Usual for release later this year, and have shared another collaboration today. "Big Brother x Lil Sister" features production from Jahlil Beats, who rather than supplying the gritty bounce he's been favoring since Bobby Shmurda's "Hot N*gga," he comes through with a soulful knock. It's a perfectly elegant backdrop for the back-and-forth between the frequent collaborators, recapturing their natural chemistry like they never left.
Jermaine Dupri & Da Brat
In support of New York Fashion Week taking place this week, Jermaine Dupri & Da Brat decided to release a fitting new song today called “Alessandro Michele,” which is named after Gucci’s creative director. Trading bars over production from Timbaland, Da Brat brags about her big bank account, while JD boasts about his and her yachts with Mariah Carey in this LA Leakers-premiere. No word yet as for where this will end up, but who really cares, everything is “Gucci.” Hit play and let us know what you think.
F U Pay Me [Tags]
Jermaine Dupri Feat. Da Brat & The-Dream
Well look what we have here. Last night, Jermaine Dupri made his way by the Power 106 studios in LA to pay a visit with the LA Leakers and chop it up for a brief interview. In addition to talking about the Kanye West & Taylor Swift feud, JD decided to give DJ Sourmilk & Justin Credible the green light to premiere his new single with former So-So Def member Da Brat called “FU Pay Me” featuring The Dream on the hook. Take a listen and let us know what you think. New hit?
#YAK (You Already Know)
Da Brat Feat. Eric Bellinger & Sage The Gemini
When it comes to making a hit, Sage The Gemini and Eric Bellinger aren't a bad team to enlist. Da Brat has done just that on "#YAK," which is a hefty does of west coast bounce, inflected with plenty of melody from its two features. Meanwhile, Brat comes through with her classic style, bringing plenty of personality and technical skill to her verses. It's definitely a different feel for a Chicago artist, but it works pretty well.
Give It To Ya (Freestyle)
Although she's rarely given the praise she deserves these days, Da Brat was one of the most vital femcees of the 90s-- in fact, she was the first solo female rapper to go platinum, doing so with her 1994 debut Funkdafied. Today, Maino pays homage to the Chicago native by offering up a freestyle over "Give It 2 You," the closing track of the aforementioned album.
Trap Queen (Freestyle)
Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen" brings the people together. No matter who you are, it's difficult to resist the gleefully catchy hook from Wap's buzzing single. Of course, more than a couple of rappers have shared their own versions of the song by this point, and there's been a surprising variety in those that have taken it on. The latest rapper to do so is none other than Da Brat, who has been showing up now and again to hop on some hot instrumentals.
Sock It 2 Me
Missy Elliott Feat. Da Brat
I just recently got into a Missy Elliott binge, which consists of listening to every single Missy album. Missy was is so dope, and she was so far ahead of her time sonically. So for Throwback Thursday today we're featuring one of Missy's singles from her debut album Supa Dupa Fly, and perhaps this will incite you to go on a Missy binge too. "Sock It 2 Me" featuring Da Brat was released in 1997 as the album's second single, and of course, it was produced by Timbaland.
Keyshia Cole Feat. Da Brat, Mila J, K. Michelle & Lil Mo
Back in early January, we premiered a freestyle from Keyshia Cole over Chris Brown's "Loyal" single, which you can listen to it here. She's since enlisted Da Brat, Mila J, K.
It's not every day we get a new song from Da Brat, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell what she'll choose to remix next. Last year, she showed up on Lorde's "Royals", which was a surprising choice (though a strangely popular one as well). Today she's back again-- on an Iggy Azalea song, at that. Iggy's current hit "Fancy" was Da Brat's choice, adding two of her own verses to the track, leaving the hook, and Iggy's third verse intact.
