There is something wondrous about the music of Clams Casino. It's hard to believe that the he was once a physical therapist student making beats on the side for fun. Indeed, he does not think like ordinary producers. "To find things to sample, I used to just type a random word-- like "blue" or "cold"-- into LimeWire or BearShare and download the first 10 results," he told Pitchfork in a 2011 interview.

There are three rappers who blew up in the early 2010s that I've always grouped together in my head, though they do hail from different corners of the country and are some of the most enigmatic artists currently working in hip hop. Drugs and rap have been pretty synonymous since the 90s, but recently there's been an influx of rappers talkin' about harder drugs than the chronic. Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap tape was perhaps the most illicit example of an ongoing trend that's taking place amongst the newer artists.

Drums are to a rap song what shoes are to an outfit. Even the flyest of threads are rendered whack if paired with white Asics. Conversely, a tuxedo T-shirt and basketball shorts has great potential, if paired with Griffey high tops. Rappers need producers to make their rhymes sizzle, their flow pulsate, their ad-libs pop. The best producers make nuanced beats that are easy on the ears. They make you want to become a rapper, so that you can participate in their beats' greatness. They make you want to dance, to love, to live.

The hype for ASAP Rocky's second album continues to grow, but Flacko's been less forthcoming than most artists when it comes to details. We don't know any of ALLA's rap features, though we know it will feature R&B genre bender FKA Twigs and Swedish pop singer Lykke Li. We also know one of Rocky's main producers, Clams Casino, will be back--and, for now, that's enough to keep us going.

ASAP Rocky was one of the biggest breakout rappers of the last few years, getting signed and releasing his debut album in an insanely short timeframe after first breaking through with "Purple Swag" and "Peso". His sophomore album has been cooking for a lot longer though, and fans have been eagerly awaiting any news on his follow-up to Long.Live.A$AP.
