The fiber of the American people has been tested over the course of the last two weeks, in which four incidents of terrible violence have prompted wide-spread protests and rapidly deteriorating race relations. July 5: Alton Sterling is shot and killed at the hands of two police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana July 6: Philando Castile is shot and killed by a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota July 7: Five police officers are shot and killed at a protest in Dallas. July 17: Three police officers are shot and killed in Baton Rouge, LA.

This week was dominated more by saddening news stories than it was by music, but the social outcry regarding the many innocent lives that were taken in the past week have also resulted directly in new music-- it's bittersweet, obviously. With plenty of artists hitting the booth to give their own take on the tense social climate, we definitely didn't lack in songs this past week.

Following today’s unique rollout strategy from Big K.R.I.T., which saw him dropping a new freestyle every hour leading up to midnight, the Mississippi artist decided to end the evening with a major announcement. Taking to his twitter account after his last freestyle, Krit decided to announce that he is no longer a member of Def Jam Records, and that he’ll presumably being taking the independent route. Big K.R.I.T. fans are in for a huge treat today. Krizzle casually announced that he'll be releasing one freestyle every hour, on the hour, from noon until midnight. He's calling it #12FOR12. No word what compelled him to release new music in this fashion rather than as an ordinary mixtape. We're not complaining.

It's now been a while since Big K.R.I.T. released his album Cadillactica, and although he hasn't announced plans for anew project, he'll be heading out on the road this Fall for a 38-city tour. On Dizzy Wright's second studio album The Growing Process, the 24-year old rapper makes an attempt at honing in his focus as an artist by establishing a moral constitution for his music to adhere to until further notice. For the most part, this is goal is met by the young upstart. While some tracks fall flat, there are definite instances in which Wright is able to spread his personal gospel in a digestible fashion.

Blues-- and more widely, music in general-- lost a legend last night. Revolutionary blues guitarist B.B. King passed away at age 89 in Las Vegas. His daughter, Patty, said he'd been in hospice care for the past two weeks for dehydration. Even after being diagnosed with diabetes almost 30 years ago, King pursued a relentless touring schedule, often performing 300 shows per year. Today, hip hop mourns the loss of one of America's true musical mavericks. Read artists' reactions to the news below.
