B.B. King Passes Away At Age 89
    May 15, 2015 at 09:47am
Blues-- and more widely, music in general-- lost a legend last night. Revolutionary blues guitarist B.B. King passed away at age 89 in Las Vegas. His daughter, Patty, said he'd been in hospice care for the past two weeks for dehydration. Even after being diagnosed with diabetes almost 30 years ago, King pursued a relentless touring schedule, often performing 300 shows per year. Today, hip hop mourns the loss of one of America's true musical mavericks. Read artists' reactions to the news below.

This week on the charts proves to be rather uneventful, as there are no new entries to speak of, although G-Eazy was able to re-enter with These Things Happen. Cadillactica, on the other hand, experienced a steep drop from its top 5 debut.

Big K.R.I.T. lands himself a strong debut for his sophomore effort Cadillactica, sliding into the Billboard 200's top 5 at #5. This happens to be the same debut as his first LP, Live From The Underground, although Krizzle upped his numbers this time, ever so slightly, moving 44,000 units. Live From The Underground did 41,000. That's definitely a respectable starting place for a rapper who refused to make anything too radio-friendly, or to deviate from his concept.

Late last week, we heard that Big K.R.I.T.'s newly-released album Cadillactica was on pace to sell 35,000 to 40,000 copies in its first week, which isn't bad in 2014. Well, the official numbers are in now, and Krizzle's surpassed those expectations by a hair. He moved 42,302 units, beating his Live From The Underground sales by just over 1,000 copies.

A weird thing happens when an artist gets signed to a major label. It seems, no matter how talented they are, no matter how much their fans are willing to support, debut albums almost always come up short. There have been exceptions, of course. (Logic's Under Pressure being the most recent example.) But, more often than not, the curse of a major label signing is very real. Perhaps no record illustrates this point more clearly than Big K.R.I.T.'s Live From The Underground.

As a 17-year-old just beginning to make waves in the rap game, Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott didn't have the same life as most kids his age. He wasn't thinking about graduating high school to attend a university or enter the work force. As a matter of fact, before he even graduated high school he had formed a collective with classmates that would come to be known as Pro Era.

Until now, Big K.R.I.T. has been pretty cryptic about the exact release date for his upcoming album, Cadillactica. A few months ago, all he would say was, “It’s gonna be still hot enough outside to ride with your windows down and your top dropped, trust me,” but now he's taken to Twitter to give us the actual drop date. Prefacing his announcement with #PAYATTENTION, Krizzle gave us a November 11th release date.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".  This week, we had to give some extra shine to Big Sean in light of the four tracks he dropped on us last week, so he's on here twice, and Big K.R.I.T. takes the final spot.
