Some people may know him as Douglas Garrett, but the people of Los Angeles know him as Beach Boy. He grew up in Long Beach during the golden era of hip-hop. Never having formal training, the southern California native sings and writes his own music.
Creating catchy melodies and euphoric harmonies while incorporating his Hip Hop style into his music. His first musical memory was listening to The Temptations with his father and from that point on music; lyrics and melodies became his obsession.
In 8th grade, tragedy struck in the Garrett household. Beach Boy’s mother was in a crippling accident where she lost her legs, leaving her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Beach Boy needed an emotional outlet and began to write poetry. That is when an English teacher discovered Beach Boy’s talent. He began to work with Beach Boy and assigned him homework that involved him analyzing his favorite Hip Hop artist, Kanye West. Taking what he learned from his English teacher and his personal studies of vocal arrangements he developed his own style of writing and began to express himself through song lyrics.
Beach Boy, Doug Garrett, DG, or however you know him as, you can always count on this: Good solid music made from the soul with passion and love with a message everyone can relate to. His message? That the impossible is always possible through music.
