HotNewHipHop talks with singer/songwriter Jon Bellion about getting writing credits on Eminem's single with Rihanna "The Monster," as well as the plans he has for his own music.
This week everyone's favorite dope boy Pusha T finally made his Charts debut, with My Name Is My Name. The album, which has been praised highly by most, managed a #4 debut, selling on the lower-end of the projected amount, with 75k. While it's solid numbers for a rapper who's been in the underground for most of his career, what does it say about those supporting 'real rap'?
This week was a good one for hip-hop. The BET Hip-Hop Awards delivered cyphers from plenty of rappers, and Curren$y hopped on a track with his former YMCMB bosses, Lil Wayne and Birdman, which was pretty cool. DJ Khaled also leaked a bajillion tracks off Suffering From Success (well, at least four).
Pusha T said in an interview that he had the best album of the year. On top of that he said that he had the best production. The audience rating on our site's review of this album at an outstanding 93%. This album is undoubtedly one of the best of 2013 with producers such as Kanye West, Hudson Mohawke, The Dream, Pharrell Williams and...
The past two weeks were dominated by Drake, who in turn dominated the charts with Nothing Was The Same. Now Justin Timberlake has taken over, with the release of The 20/20 Experience 2, his second album in the span of a year, and his second album to debut at #1 in that same time.
This past week saw a few big mixtape drops, from the likes of Game and Nipsey Hussle, Lil Durk, and The Ying Yang Twins (jokes...but they really did drop a mixtape). Childish Gambino came through with a new record, "Yaphet Kotto," which is always a big deal since he's dropping music far and in between (although a new album is on the way).
Logic was quietly grinding in his hometown of Maryland for some time, releasing tape after tape, before he hit it big and signed a deal with Def Jam. His story is similar to that of many rappers: an absentee father, a mother with a drug addiction, and a high school drop out. However, Logic is not your average rapper.

This past week the Drake frenzy surrounding Nothing Was The Same came to a peak when the actual first week sales were released. The rapper's album had the best opening week of this year second to Justin Timberlake's come back effort-- he even topped Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail first week sales.
This week, as per usual, we provide you with five records from the past seven days that caught our attention but may have been missed by you. Check out some upcoming talent from the likes of Vic Mensa and CJ Fly, peep a crazy remix from dead prez, and more in this week's Underrated Audio. Click through the images above, and let us know which underrated records you're feeling at the moment.
HNHH Does BET Green Carpet With Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Yo Gotti, Bone Thugs & More (Part 1) Oct 2, 2013 at 09:32am 170 Views
HNHH hit up the BET Hip Hop Awards this Sunday, and we got our very own Broady The Joker to tear up the Green Carpet for some interviews. We talked to Nelly about his new album, asked Snoop about getting into stand-up, as well as hanging out with Cash Out, Tiara Thomas, Yo Gotti, August Alsina, Lola Monroe and more!
This week has been Drizzy Drake everything, with the official release of Nothing Was The Same and a bunch of promo for it. Drake has not started taking over the charts yet, but that will change next week when we get the results of his first week sales.
Underrated Audio provides you with four tracks from a range of rappers with four quite different sounds. Rappers on today's list are hailing from Inglewood, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Indiana, and each of their tracks is reflective of the environment and area they grew up in. Peep joints from Tree, Skeme, ODDISEE, and Freddie Gibbs in the galleries above.
This past week The Weeknd dominated the charts, although he was outshone only by country star Keith Urban. The race between the country star and r'n'b star was a close one, with 3,000 units making the difference for the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. The race was so close, in fact, that Drizzy and The Weeknd prematurely celebrated, when Drake congratulated his friend at his recent L.A. show.
Last week we saw a solid output of music from artists both big and small. However, Drake took the cake with Nothing Was The Same leaking-- basically all talk revolved around Drizzy. Today let's take a look at five dope tracks that dropped in the past seven days, that are unrelated to the Toronto king. Let us know which underrated rappers you're feeling at the moment.
Kevin Gates Talks Prison, Depression & Choosing Music Over Street Life Sep 19, 2013 at 01:38pm 35,215 Views
Kevin Gates, a New Orleans, Baton Rouge native, had a tough time leaving the street life alone to focus completely on his music. It's a feat he seems to have finally accomplished though, but his troubled past is still well-documented in his lyrics. If you aren't familiar with the rapper's discography, which includes the stand-out album Stranger Than Fiction, we're about to make you familiar.
In the competition between the same-day release rappers Juicy J and Big Sean Juicy J appears to be taking the lead, although Sean debuted stronger than Juicy initially. Not to say they both haven't fallen quite a few spots-- they have. However Juicy J's fan base remains more persistent that Sean Don, with Stay Trippy selling another 21k at #15 and Hall Of Fame selling only 18k at #24.
With the school year already in session we've been seeing rappers get busy too-- albums are dropping one by one, and there are more to come, with Drake's Nothing Was The Same in ten days, and MMG's Self Made 3 prior to that, Danny Brown's OLD finally on the way, plus Meek Mill's mixtape...You get the idea. Take a break from those big hitters with a four underrated pieces of audio from the past se
HNHH spoke to random people on the street to test their knowledge of Hip Hop trivia for both popular and lesser known facts. The results were interesting. In this first episode, see if you can tell which artist only sold 1,000 copies of their debut album, was not a backup dancer prior to becoming a rapper and who wasn't an artist mentioned in Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse.
This week Big Sean and Juicy J enter the Billboard 200, debuting one after another. Each rapper sold a respectable amount, however, it's nothing too crazy. Sean Don actually sold less than his debut album, although he promoted Hall Of Fame as better than his debut, perhaps the fans didn't care that much? They cared enough though-- he moved 72,000 units, which gave him a #3 debut.
After a hiatus last week, Underrated Audio returns today to bring you several overlooked records that dropped in the past seven days. We've had an influx of mixtapes recently, which have provided us with most of these tracks-- no Lil Wayne on this feature though. Take a look through the tracks and let us know what your favorite underrated cut was this past week.
We see two new entries when it comes to hip-hop on Charts Don't Lie this week. They belong to Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt and A$AP Mob's A$AP Ferg. While both rappers moved respectable amounts, it gives us a moment to think about the whole ideas of crews in hip-hop, and how no matter what, there is always one rap leader who has to make an impression on the audience first.

Phil Ade is the next rapper up out of the DMV area. The rapper has consistently brought rhymes and wordplay with a mix of sometimes conscious rap and sometimes ignorant rap. It's a good combination which has led to a devout following of Phil Ade fans, who expect more and more from the rapper after each mixtape. Rightly so.
