Weekly review of the Hip-Hop and R&B sales/charts.
This week we really saw the effects of Kendrick Lamar's verse on "Control" transfer over to the charts. The rapper's debut album, which officially went platinum this past week, has been slowly creeping back up the charts, something we've been seeing on Charts Don't Lie over the past weeks. Rather than jumping the usual few places this week though, K.
We got quite a few new mixtapes this week, including one really big one from Dizzy Wright, The Golden Age.
This week was obviously a memorable one for hip-hop, with Big Sean's "Control" dropping and a Kendrick Lamar frenzy ensuing. While the verse has received way more attention than we could have imagined, plenty of rappers are retaliating and introducing new excitement into the rap game which isn't a bad thing.
It doesn't even really need to be said at this point, but this past week was dominated by Kendrick Lamar and the many "Control" responses that followed. It seems every rapper feels some type of way about some line in K. Dot's verse, even if they weren't directly called out.
"Control": Just What Hip Hop Needed? Weigh In On Kendrick Lamar's Verse Aug 14, 2013 at 11:39am 186 Views
If we've learned anything from Kendrick Lamar's verse on Big Sean's song "Control", it's that there seems to be something lacking in today's Hip Hop genre. This is evidenced by the reaction of fans, the industry, social media and artists themselves.
We have two new-comers to Charts Don't Lie this week, who come from opposite ends of the spectrum- Robin Thicke and Tech N9ne. Both artists had impressive debuts, with Thicke earning a #1 debut for the first time, and Tech N9ne earning his chart peak as well.
This week we don't have too many songs for your to look through.
More than any other artists or group (excepting Scarface) Outkast is responsible for the rise of southern rap. They were among the first acts to gain recognition from the region and remain one of the most commercially and critically successful rap groups to date.
Last week we contemplated the low sales for Ace Hood's Trials & Tribulations album. This week, we see a severe drop for Ace's album, at the same time we get a new entry with similarly low sales, Rich Gang. We all know those Young Money fans go hard for their rappers, however, it appears they didn't come out to purchase Birdman's YMCMB compilation (of sorts), Rich Gang.
This past week we saw a pretty solid amount of music get released, however, all things turned to Drake when his single "All Me" dropped (so it really is All Drake). But for Underrated Audio we will take the focus off Drizzy for a minute and present you with five tracks from the past week that may have been swallowed up by those huge joints from Drake, 2 Chainz, etc.
Kevin Gates doesn't seem to do much talking, but he doesn't really need to when his music says it all. Kevin Gates is a rapper who comes from the streets of Baton Rouge, Lousiana, and chose to focus on his rap life instead of the streets. His music reflects this, and in it he expresses himself in ways not many gangsters usually do.
Our new entry on Charts Don't Lie this week belongs to Ace Hooooood. The rapper constantly on his grind delivered Trials & Tribulations after months of promotion, a huge hit single, "Bugatti," a listening event, among other things. And while it worked in his favor somewhat (it's his best sales to date), it's still not very much of an improvement from his last album, Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Underrated Audio brings you four tracks from the past seven days that didn't get enough looks. This week Kidd Kidd offers a tribute to both Trayvon Martin and Ahlittia North, Sango drops some music to vibe too with help from JMSN, R.A. The Rugged Man drops a serious remix and Stalley stunts on "A-Wax." Check out the songs in the gallery above.

Legendary director of “He Got Game,” “Do The Right Thing,” “Clockers,” “Inside Man,” and much more, Spike Lee is raising funds for his next film through Kickstarter and offering some nice incentives to those that can contribute to his project. There are several incentives at various levels, but the basketball-related ones include: for $500 you will get a call from Spike and ta
On Friday we took a look at Kobe Bryant’s mother auctioning a 2000 NBA Championship ring that Kobe had ordered for his mother, which was a replica of the ring he was given by the team. At the time the bidding was up over $40,000, but eventually went for over $100,000. Bryant had taken his mother, Pam, to court when she originally planned on auctioning off memorabilia she had of Kobe’s early
On Friday we posted a photo of Dwyane Wade's ex wife in the streets of Chicago holding a sign that read "NBA Miami Heat Star Mother Of His Children Out On The Streets," and now we get more info about why Siovaughn Funches-Wade was "protesting." It all stems from the court case between the two, as we reported earlier had sued the Heat star, and then that lawsuit was removed.
Jay Z stays breaking records, literally. The rap superstar is not only seeing plenty of success with his single off Magna Carta Holy Grail, but he is also making Billboard history with the album. This week a few records were made by Hov, including the title of the most #1s in Billboard history-- and the rest you can read about below.
This week's Underrated Audio gathers four tracks of varying kinds for your listening pleasure. Both Kevin Gates and Ace Hood dropped albums this past week, and while Ace Hood's Trials & Tribulations was undoubtedly made for the mainstream, Kevin Gates' project took a somewhat experimental approach to rap.
Charles Barkley may not be on Twitter, but if you ask him for his opinion he will give it to you unfiltered. As part of a celebrity golf tournament, Charles was on CNBC’s “Closing Bell,” where he gave his opinion on various things including people people leeching off athletes, why he stays off Twitter, and even touched on the George Zimmerman not guilty trial verdict. Barkley says th
Like most mother’s, Kobe Bryant’s mom was tired of holding onto all of her kid’s old stuff long after he had moved out. Pam Bryant decided she wanted to sell some of Kobe’s things at auction and see if she can get some money for them. Problem is, most of this was valuable memorabilia that Kobe didn’t want sold. The two ended up going to court over the matter and eventually settled t
Shaquille O’Neal has dabbled in law enforcement since before his retirement, and was always clear that he wanted to become an actual cop some day. Now after serving as a reserve cop on Miami Beach, Diesel was sworn in as a police officer for the small town of Golden Beach. With only a population of approximately 919 people, Officer O’Neal will mostly be working a speed-trap handing out tick
Saturday Night Live performer and impressionist, Jay Pharaoh, was at last night’s ESPY awards and did a hilarious Jay-...sorry, Jay Z (no hyphen) impression as Jay the Sports Agent. He had some great lines poking fun at Jigga running Roc Nation Sports, and how he has split his time between what seems to be innumerable ventures. A couple of the gems were when he listed Jay’s accomplishme
