Giving you the direct perspective from Skeme and his producer Boi-1da, "Track Breakdown" is an HNHH series that highlights a specific cut by speaking to both the artist and producer about the song's creation.
As we do every week, we aim to bring you overlooked records that dropped in the past seven days with Underrated Audio. These were cuts that didn't get a ton of views, so we're hoping to give them a boost with a second look. This week's edition features music from Tsu Surf, Roc Marciano, GLC and more.
This week nothing major dropped in terms of hip-hop. Nonetheless, overall album sales went up by 42%. To what can we blame this spike in sales? It would be safe to say Black Friday, which is basically the commencement of the holiday season/shopping frenzy.
Underrated Audio provides you with a few joints we feel deserve an extra look or two from the last seven days. This week we give some more shine to A$AP Nast, another New Yorker who's a female by the name of Leaf, Nikko Lafre and Shlohmo. Peep those four cuts in the gallery above, and let us know what underrated piece of audio you've been digging this week.
Eminem found his way back to #1 on the Billboard 200, after spending a week at #2. The rapper sold the same amount that some rappers do opening week (if not more) and he's in his third week on shelves with MMLP2.
As we do every week, we provide you with several overlooked tracks that appeared on the site this past week in Underrated Audio. The records on here didn't quite hit as many views as we thought they deserved, so we're giving them a second look. Check out the five selections of the week in the gallery above.
Wiz Khalifa is currently working on a new album, Blacc Hollywood. He's already revealed some of the artists he's working with on the album, including The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus and Adele, while he's released just one (possible) album cut, "Look Into My Eyes." Although the updates on the album have been a little slow lately, we got to speak to Wiz about the whole concept of 'Blacc Hollywood.'
This week we have two new-comers on Charts Don't Lie, the first being buzzing singer Jhene Aiko and the latter, veteran in the game, Bun B. Jhene Aiko pulled pretty good numbers for her debut EP, leaving us hopeful for what's to come from the West Coast native.
Underrated Audio is here to provide you with choice cuts from the past week that seemed to be over-looked by the average viewer-- meaning they didn't get as many views as they deserved. This week we've got six tracks spanning the genres of r'n'b and hip-hop, including one that's not necessarily either.
Waka Flocka Reveals Rap EDM Album "Flockaveli Psychotics" To Drop Next Year Nov 21, 2013 at 02:52pm 1,853 Views
Waka Flocka has not been shy about his support of the EDM genre, he's even touring with electronic DJ Steve Aoki at the moment. We caught Waka on a day off in L.A. and got a quick update on what it's like to tour with Aoki, Flockaveli 2, and his EDM rap album.
With the Yeezus tour back in full swing (albeit several dates cancelled), Ye is back to his usual antics, and that's a good thing. The Yeezus tour is far from your average hip-hop show, as those who have attended know. The event is cinematic and theatrical, with actors coming on stage (including one dressed as Jesus) through out the show, Ye ranting, and fans generally rejoicing.
Episode 2 Of Our Exclusive "4Eva N A Tour" BTS With Big K.R.I.T. Nov 20, 2013 at 11:18am 5,632 Views
With this exclusive look at Big K.R.I.T.'s "4Eva N A Tour" behind-the-scenes, we catch a glimpse of life on the road with the "King Remembered In Time" artist.
Eminem week officially hit us with full force. We've seen legendary rappers like Jay Z and Kanye West both drop albums this past year, but none compared to the chart domination of Slim Shady. As we mentioned last week, a few of Em's old albums had popped back up on the Billboard 200, presumably due to anticipation for new one, MMLP2.
You know the drill. Take a step away from your mainstream rap anthems and give a second look at these five rap records that dropped over the past seven days. From Strong Arm Steadys' KRNDN, to Slaughterhouse's Crooked I, to upcoming Chicago rappers like Giftz and Vic Mensa, we've got your indie rap needs covered.
Tech N9ne Says He Wants To Work With Eminem & Get Beats From Kanye West Nov 14, 2013 at 04:22pm 15,151 Views
We recently heard Tech N9ne go crazy (and spit super fast) on Hopsin's "Rip Your Heart Out," which is just one of several collaborations the two rappers have done together. The same day "Rip Your Heart Out" dropped, we hit up DJ Skee's Skee Live show and got to talk to Tech about his music and who else he'd like to work with in the rap game.
Lecrae Says He'd Love To See More Substance In Hip Hop And Responds To Critics Nov 12, 2013 at 10:52am 640 Views
HNHH: You were the first rapper to win a Grammy for a gospel album - What was the first thing that ran through your mind when you found out?
Well, it looks like DJ Khaled will in fact not be suffering from success with his latest album. His second week on the charts finds him plummeting more than 20 spots, and moving less than 10,000 units. However if there is one rapper we could say has suffered from success, it is most definitely Eminem.
Everyone seems to be in Eminem overdrive with the release of Marshall Mathers LP 2 (HotNewHipHop is no different, as you probably noticed), but Underrated Audio gives us a chance to shy away from whatever is taking over our Top 100 chart or taking over our News feed.
Eminem's new album, Marshall Mathers LP 2, officially hits stores tomorrow. The lead singles he's dropped thus far have left fans with opposing views-- some stand by their fierce support of Em, while others wish the old drug-addled rapper would return.
Last week we saw several independent rappers make their debut on the charts (sort of-- some of them didn't sell enough to actually chart, yet), but this week we return to the big guns, like Drake and DJ Khaled. Khaled is an interesting case, because while he is definitely considered among the 'big guns' aka mainstream stars, he didn't move mainstream numbers.
This week we overloaded with music, thanks in most part to Halloween-- rappers love dropping their shit on a holiday of some sort or on some themed tip, and this year was no different. Among the ton of mixtapes and singles we received, we've picked out four in particular that deserve a second look in this week's Underrated Audio.
Nothing too big transpired on the charts this week when it comes to hip-hop. That's not to say there weren't hip-hop releases-- there most definitely were, however, none could top Drake's Nothing Was The Same at #4 on the Billboard 200. And if DJ Khaled's low sales projections are correct, Khaled probably won't top Drizzy either next week.
As November fast approaches, we're all getting excited to hear Eminem's come-back (we hope) on MMLPII on November 5th. However, October 15th was also an important day for hip-hop, with three of the most dope and underrated emcees all dropping records: Boldy James, Dom Kennedy, and Black Milk.
Atlanta, Georgia. The city bursting with waffle houses and strip clubs also happens to be one of today’s hip-hop capitals. Trap music has skyrocketed over the past couple years, ATL being its home. Twenty years ago, however, there was a much different picture in the A. The Dirty South was simply trying to garner recognition while the East and West Coasts shared a stranglehold on the rap scene.
This week everyone's favorite dope boy Pusha T finally made his Charts debut, with My Name Is My Name. The album, which has been praised highly by most, managed a #4 debut, selling on the lower-end of the projected amount, with 75k. While it's solid numbers for a rapper who's been in the underground for most of his career, what does it say about those supporting 'real rap'?
