We keep you up to date on everything going on in battle rap.
This week we overloaded with music, thanks in most part to Halloween-- rappers love dropping their shit on a holiday of some sort or on some themed tip, and this year was no different. Among the ton of mixtapes and singles we received, we've picked out four in particular that deserve a second look in this week's Underrated Audio.
HotNewHipHop's On The Come Up profiles emerging rappers and producers that show strong promise but haven't necessarily seen the shine they deserve, from those deep underground to artists on the cusp of the mainstream that you may have missed. You'll find analyses of their defining characteristics, examples of their best work and plenty of opportunities to dig deeper via hyperlinks.
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

Earlier today, Lil Wayne was interviewed by Alison Fensterstock from NOLA.com at the Macy's store in Metarie, Louisiana.
With everyone going into election-look-at-me-vote mode today, here are some songs to just vibe out too once you've had enough Obama or Romney talk for the day. I know my quota is almost full.Sir Michael Rocks- LVL 1 Feat. Shorty K & Tris J It's a TPC affair on this cut, and I'm enjoying it. I wanna join the clique. Sir Michael Rocks gives shine
If it weren't for the weird for-pay nature of Drake's new "mixtape" then all five of these tracks would come from the 6 God. That's not to say the rest of the week was terrible. Our Top 100 chart contained a number of notable tracks.
As many people know the Air Jordan 5 "Bel-Air is releasing this Saturday, October 5th. But what a lot of people don't know is that it is releasing along with a whole 80's themed Jordan pack. The entire pack has the same bright colorway throughout with neon green, pink, and blue on most of the sneakers.
BTS Photos: Video Shoot For E-40's "Function" Feat. Young Jeezy, Chris Brown, French Montana & More Jul 17, 2012 at 11:58am 1 View
E-40 packed his "Function" remix with talent as the track features Young Jeezy, French Montana, Problem, Red Cafe, and Chris Brown. They were all on hand for the video shoot. Check out the gallery below.
French Montana celebrated his album release for Excuse My French at King of Diamonds on May 24th, the mecca of all strip clubs. The following night the partying continued when Young Jeezy hit up KOD with his crew. Peep photos of both nights from NLPG Images. Thanks to Echo Hattix & Moses Hill!
This past week we did receive quite a few massive hip-hop records, including a new banger from the Young Money crew, a massive remix of YG's "My Nigga," and a stand-out ScHoolboy Q record "Break The Bank," among other Very Hotttt releases.
I'm going to assume everyone's seen the XXL Freshman 2012 list, unless you're seriously out of touch with the internet...in which case you probably wouldn't be on HNHH in the first place. The always controversial list was once again, well, controversial. Many wondered where ASAP Rocky was (he declined) and everyone had their own thoughts about who should or shouldn't have been on the list.
Last week we questioned the grip of Will.i.am's influence on the mainstream, with his solo effort, #willpower, moving less than 30k opening week. We could also blame this on the ever-waning sales of albums in general. This week, we get LL Cool J's Authentic album as a new entry in Charts Don't Lie.
Hip-hop and beef are synonymous with one another. The nature of the game is competitive, and so stars are always getting into tussles with one another, diss tracks are released (if you're Papoose, it often appears for no reason whatsoever), and with help from social networks like Twitter, we often have feuds occurring over the insignificant issues.
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh huh honey."
Have you ever scrolled through Instagram and instantly burst into uncontrollable laughter? Raised your eyebrow? Scratched your head? Instantly smiled? Thought, "Damn. That's dope."? Stared at your phone? Did an instant repost? HNHH is sure you've answered yes to at least one of those questions.
John Wall's Teammate Doesn't Want To See Him "Butt Naked" In Magazine Jul 14, 2013 at 05:14pm 24 Views
John Wall and Kenneth Faried shed their uniforms for ESPN Magazine’s “The Body” issue as both players posed for ‘tastefully’ nude photos. The issue is supposed to help bring awareness to the body, and make people feel more comfortable with who they are. One person who was uncomfortable with Wall’s poses was teammate Martell Webster. When asked by a member of the Washington Post
HotNewHipHop's On The Come Up series profiles rising stars in the rap game that show strong promise and the will to succeed. Most of the time, they're new to the site but deserve some shine. We will profile artists and producers ranging from those in the deep underground to artists just about to bubble up into the mainstream that you may have missed.
Here it is, our weekly spotlight of songs that HNHH readers pushed to the top of our charts Please keep in mind that Top Tracks highlights a hand-picked assortment of the most popular songs on our Top 100 chart. These are songs that generated a lot of interest, whether it be through comments or views, and still deserve a second look or a deeper consideration.
"Control": Just What Hip Hop Needed? Weigh In On Kendrick Lamar's Verse Aug 14, 2013 at 11:39am 186 Views
If we've learned anything from Kendrick Lamar's verse on Big Sean's song "Control", it's that there seems to be something lacking in today's Hip Hop genre. This is evidenced by the reaction of fans, the industry, social media and artists themselves.
This segment of Charts Don't Lie is relatively subdued, as we have no big new entries to speak of just yet. While Childish Gambino's new album, Because The Internet, dropped last week, it has yet to start charting although it is expected to sell a pretty respectable amount, especially considering it's double the amount of his last release, Camp.
This past week the Drake frenzy surrounding Nothing Was The Same came to a peak when the actual first week sales were released. The rapper's album had the best opening week of this year second to Justin Timberlake's come back effort-- he even topped Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail first week sales.
This week was a good one for hip-hop. The BET Hip-Hop Awards delivered cyphers from plenty of rappers, and Curren$y hopped on a track with his former YMCMB bosses, Lil Wayne and Birdman, which was pretty cool. DJ Khaled also leaked a bajillion tracks off Suffering From Success (well, at least four).
Underrated Audio aims to provide you with some dope looks from the last seven days that flew under most peoples' radars. While they may have received front-page placement on HNHH, they didn't get as many views as they deserve, so we shine a little more light on them right here.
