Your monthly recap of what went down in the hip hop industry.
The 1990’s was the most crucial decade in the mainstream acceptance of hip hop as a viable art form. The genre’s fresh, energetic sound, coupled with an explosion of talent and one very tragic feud, allowed for rap music to assume a dominant position in popular culture. Some of the legendary acts that created the foundation for this success are still
Everyone seems to be in Eminem overdrive with the release of Marshall Mathers LP 2 (HotNewHipHop is no different, as you probably noticed), but Underrated Audio gives us a chance to shy away from whatever is taking over our Top 100 chart or taking over our News feed.
Shock value was everything for Odd Future when they were getting started. Whether donning ski masks and performing alongside possessed-looking girls on Jimmy Fallon, detailing ridiculously violent sexual encounters, or mixing seemingly-lethal drug cocktails in their music videos, the L.A. crew first got attention for their antics, in addition to their considerable talents.
Jay Z made a song dedicated to Tom Ford last year, one of Harlem's hottest rappers wears strictly skinny jeans (A$AP Rocky), and one of the industry's most talked about rappers (Kanye West) is addicted to high-fashion. A little over a decade ago, the genre's finest openly wore baggy clothing, throwback jerseys, and du-rags. It's an understatement to say hip-hop's fashion sense has changed a bit.
“I am the struggle. I am the hustle. I am the city. I’m the pot in the kitchen.” Yo Gotti raps on the title track of his latest album, I Am. The self-proclaimed king of Memphis has been involved in the trap game for a while now, and he has much to share, telling stories through out his new album, I Am. Gotti‘s strong southern influence is clearly shown throughout the 13-track project.
Rapper, Lyricist, Rhymesayer. All labels for one person: the MC. The MC not only has many different aliases but comes with many different personalities: the gangster, the conscious individual, the partygoer, the player, the everyperson.

In the late 80s, a few cousins got together to form a little rap crew in Brooklyn, New York. Robert Diggs, Gary Grice and Russel Jones, better known as Rza, Gza and Ol' Dirty Bastard respectively, had no idea what kind of world-changing journey they were about to embark on. They were simply teenagers who enjoyed kung fu, hip-hop and probably a little weed smoke.
While anticipation grows for A$AP Rocky's second album's release, At.Long.Last.ASAP (A.L.L.A), Rocky has been up to a lot more than just rapping. Since the release of Long.Live.ASAP in 2013, Rocky has been on hiatus, at least, from the rapsphere. Even before he dropped his debut album, he started experimenting in the business of fashion.
Who doesn’t love Wiz and Spitta? Now they won’t be the first ones to be lauded for being complex lyricists. But guess what, that’s ok. They may not wow you with lyrically-dense bars, but they are both able to meticulously string together hypnotic records.
This wasn't a very exciting week for rap on the charts. Over the last couple cycles we've seen the same albums slowly descending, with Drake being the only record to have a second wind in recent weeks. We did see Kehlani's debut this week, taking a page from Drizzy and Young Thug's playbook and putting her "mixtape" on iTunes.
On Tupac's birthday a couple days ago, we celebrated by making a list of his most influential tracks."California Love," "Changes," and "Keep Ya Head Up" were a few of the most influential tracks 2Pac created, but there's a whole lot more than to his output than just the hits. Today, we've decided to honor him by taking a peak at some of his lesser-known cuts.
In the '90s the rap and R&B scenes had really emerged in to their own distinctiveness. The R&B scene was dominated by acts like Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, SWV, Ginuwine, Mariah Carey, Brandy and Monica and many many more.
Underrated Audio aims to provide you with some dope looks from the last seven days, that flew under most peoples' radars. While they may have received front-page placement on HNHH, they didn't get as many views as they deserve, so we shine a little more light on them right here.
Last week we saw several independent rappers make their debut on the charts (sort of-- some of them didn't sell enough to actually chart, yet), but this week we return to the big guns, like Drake and DJ Khaled. Khaled is an interesting case, because while he is definitely considered among the 'big guns' aka mainstream stars, he didn't move mainstream numbers.
“Internet rapper” has generally forever been considered a negative term. In the eyes of many core hip-hop heads, being real life-hot is always more favorable than being internet-hot. Often, however, it’s the opposite that’s true. “Bad publicity” may not even exist anymore.

When it comes to establishing yourself as a superstar hip hop producer, branding is everything. Unlike the MCs and vocalists these people work with, gaining exposure can prove a much more difficult task when most of your work remains behind the scenes.
Manolo Rose Says He Has Songs With Harry Fraud & Hit-Boy In Store Jun 11, 2015 at 11:18am 2,413 Views
Fresh off the release of his debut mixtape Concrete Rose, Manolo Rose stopped by the office to speak on the project and what else he has in store this year.
Summer is about to be in session. University students wrapped up their final days a month or two ago, and high school students followed suit around two weeks ago. For those high school students in their last year, this inevitably means prom and all the things that go with it: limousines, parents taking photos, getting fancy, friends, and general debauchery as the night progresses.
Today we've got our second episode of Hip-Hop Trivia, where we get our correspondent Ashlee Ray to hit the streets and test unsuspecting strangers on their rap IQ.
Nothing shows the colossal growth of hip-hop and rap music over the last 40 years than its prevalence in video games. What could only be seen has an odd pairing at best has turned into one of the most successful cross-cultural relationships in entertainment.
Kanye West cut his teeth producing records for the likes of Jay Z, but has since left his mark as one of the greatest rappers of the past 15 years. His influence on rap music and culture top notch, only to be met by the top dogs in the game.
