We take on the task of ranking Lil Wayne's thirteen official (and solo) mixtapes.
An important facet of memorable groups throughout hip-hop history is chemistry: the dynamics every member brings to the table is an essential part of a group's success. Black Hippy's rise to the top has been so prevalent and quick because each of their four main members - Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar - each bring something radically different to what the crew represents.
If Def Jam taught us anything, it's to respect the DJ. The DJ is responsible for the perpetuation of the art form that is hip-hop. Without DJs, there'd be no medium for the streets and masses to access the music they crave.
Not only is the rap game stressful, it can be dangerous as well.
Two years ago, Jay-Z and Kanye West joined forces and crowned themselves the kings of rap. After an extensive worldwide Watch The Throne tour, the two went back to their separate careers to work on solo projects. Although they both welcomed a brand new baby in the last year and a half, they couldn’t be in more different places musically.
Last week, at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, Jay Electronica gave fans a set to remember as he brought out labelmate Jay Z, Mac Miller, J. Cole, and Talib Kweli. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jay is an elusive rapper and producer who joined Jay Z’s Roc Nation roster label in 2010.
We're in midst of a major shift in hip-hop right now, where rappers are taking matters into their own hands. Major labels like Interscope, Def Jam, and Atlantic Records seem to be having less control over their artists. The tide is changing, and the result is a mainly positive one. Fans are receiving music how they want, when they want, from their favorite artists without the major-label hassle.
With the rise of social media, we can only wonder if artists would have the balls to say the things they say via Instagram and/or Twitter in real ass life. The social media age has made it all too easy for artists and the average person alike to throw shade whenever they please, and then, when things get a bit rough, hit 'delete.' Fortunately, most of the time, we catch it.
Yesterday the blogs and gossip sites went crazy over security footage from an elevator at the Standard Hotel in NYC on the night of the Met Gala. The footage showed Solange, Jay Z and Beyonce entering the elevator with security guards, and as the doors close, Solange completely attacks Hova, feet kicking in the air and hands flailing.
Cole World: The Sideline Story was considered somewhat of a disappointment to fans who really knew the raw talent that J. Cole posseses. The storyteller and the street smart rapper that fans loved was missing in his debut album. This time around Cole delivers a more cohesive project, with tracks easily flowing one by one to create a complete concept: Born Sinner.
Although he’s been in the rap game since the early '90s, Pusha T had yet to release a studio solo album. Until now. As one-half of the Clipse with his brother (now) No Malice, Push saw his popularity rise with their hit single “Grindin.” Three albums and 16 years later, Push, real name Terrence Thornton and his brother parted ways musically to work on their solo careers.
2013 was undoubtedly a great year for rap music. If you are a die-hard hip-hop head, you are probably praying that 2014 will continue along the same lines, if not one-up 2013. Now that we're examining some of the releases lined up for this year, the chances look good.
With A$AP Rocky debuting the new track "M's" just hours ago, excitement for his upcoming album has never been higher. A few weeks ago, we got a title, A.L.L.A. (At. Long.La$t.A$AP), and then a potential release date, so we're in the full-swing of what was once called the "album release cycle," before Beyoncé upended that shit in December 2013.
Yesterday, amid flamethrower bursts and a gaggle of up-and-coming grime artists, Kanye West debuted the third song we've heard from his upcoming album thus far.
The world of hip-hop is affiliated with glamour, partying, money and fun! It’s no wonder why so many rappers flock to the industry each year. But only the rappers that make it big get to enjoy these activities. There are tons of rappers in the game but only a select few make it stardom, to the point where everyone knows their names.
With summer in full effect, we've decided to pay homage to the best season of the year by collecting an array of photos featuring some of your favorite hip-hop ladies in nothing but their bikini.
Few names have taken the hip-hop world by storm like ILoveMakonnen has in the last few months. A buzz-worthy mixtape artist came to mainstream fame after signing to Drake's OVO Sound label, along with having Drizzy blessing his single "Tuesday" with a verse. ILoveMakonnen's career hasn't been the same since, and Tuesdays at the club have been going up ever since.
Just as a disclaimer, you won't find Detox on this list. We gave up on that a long time ago. We can only assume at this point that Dre is swimming in a literal pool of Apple money somewhere, Scrooge McDuck style. What you will find on this list however is a whole bunch of projects that we cannot wait any longer for, we need them.
With Tha Carter V still firmly within the clutches of Birdman's grubby fingers, Lil Wayne made the wise decision to begin working on another album earlier this year.
In the age of the internet it seems everybody can be a rapper, or at least make a feeble attempt at so doing. It may seem hard to find real talent with the game cluttered by generic, wanna-be, or insignificant rappers.
Last night proved to be an eventful one, when we learned that Lil Boosie was finally a free man. All the internet rejoiced, and fans of the Baton Rouge native began to come out of the woodwork, just in time to celebrate his freedom.
YG first popped up on the radar with the 2009 song "Toot It And Boot It" featuring Ty Dolla $ign. While he was locked up serving a six-month sentence for a parole violation stemming from a home invasion, the Compton native saw the song steadily climb the Billboard charts. Once YG was released, he had several label options, eventually signing with Def Jam.
With the rise of digital music, decline of music sales, and mass growth and adoption of social networks and blogs, we have seen the playing field become leveled. With that has come fewer major label releases and a lion share of independent releases.
A$AP Rocky’s relatively short career in the rap game has been one filled with high praise. His debut mixtape, Live.Love.A$AP, received exponential buzz solely off the strength of “Purple Swag,” and it was more so off the strength of the visual, which went viral (visuals have become a key component to Rocky’s career).
