Although Labor Day weekend is bitter-sweet, since it basically signals the fact that summer is over ):, Fool's Gold made the most of it by rounding up a mix of NYC-based rappers and artists abroad, to perform live at the Inlet.
Rick Ross is a work horse. Despite legal troubles, the Maybach Music boss just released a seventeen-track mixtape to hold us over until his next official project. Mind you, Ross released a #1 overall album last year in Mastermind, along with a #2 rap release in Hood Billionaire. He's been having a quiet year musically, but that all changed this past Thursday when he dropped Black Dollar.
Travi$ Scott's new album has been blasting in speakers/headphones everywhere since Friday (or earlier, depending if you snagged a leak). In that amount of time, critics and fans alike have deconstructed and analyzed the debut record, finding both faults and perfections. Even our editors were torn.
Jay Rock has made quite the name for himself over the past few years with strong features alongside his peers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q. Just recently, the California native released his second full-length album 90059, so what better time to look back at some of the essential tracks he's delivered throughout his tenure, both from that album and prior.
Giving fans very little notice, Rick Ross went ahead and dropped his Black Dollar mixtape last week. If you've checked it out, you'll know -- much like Rich Forever -- the project plays much like an album.
Travi$ Scott has been the figure of some controversy for a myriad of reasons. Number one, he appears to have a reputation for being a dick, but that's actually not anything new to rap. He's also been known to bite styles, which is yet another familiar trope. But, perhaps above all, is the fact that both Grand Hustle and G.O.O.D.
The VMAs were the biggest event of the week providing an opportunity for the lovely ladies of hip hop to rock their most revealing and/or over-the-top outfits. Naturally, Tinashe came out on top.
One of the commenters on one of our recent quizzes encouraged us to give you guys a little history lesson on hip-hop, and we're taking him up on that idea. We know it's about to be the weekend, but yall got time for one more quiz before you clock out of school mode?
Rodeo just dropped, and along with Travi$ Scott's virtuoso artistry, there are loads of quality features on the album. From R&B crooner The Weeknd, to the indie icon Toro Y Moi, newer rappers like Quavo and Swae Lee, to established cats like Juicy J, the album boasts a variety of guests who offer their own style to the tracks.
It's that time of the week again. On Friday we round up the HNHH staff's favorite releases from the past week, and compile them in a no-skips-necessary playlist. We had a few notable releases this week, namely Travi$ Scott's Rodeo, Rick Ross' Black Dollar and K Camp's Only Way Is Up.
Battle rap is quickly growing as a culture. What was almost completely relegated to street corners and Youtube a few years ago has garnered national recognition, more tv programming, Pay-Per-View events, and other attention of the mainstream media. Hip Hop icons like Eminem and Snoop Dogg have put on events for the battle scene and at this rate things can only continue to expand.
When you think of club-ready hip hop music that was bumpin' from 2000-2010, Swizz Beatz is one of the elite names that should come to mind. The Bronx producer-DJ-rapper-fashionista-artist can virtually do anything under the sun, but he was at his most potent through the aforementioned years when he was producing rap bangers for the likes of Jay Z, T.I., DMX, and many more.
Tyler The Creator recently made headlines because he was banned from going to Australia and the UK, due to his controversial lyrics. Apparently lyrics from tracks like "VCR," "Blow," "Sarah," "Tron Cat" and "French" have been ruled so obscene, that the UK doesn't want him in their country. The craziest part? This is nothing new.
With a box office record to its name thanks to millions and millions earned, "Straight Out of Compton" -- the NWA biopic -- has set Hollywood on fire. It comes as no surprise that the film industry is now looking in to the history of hip-hop to tell more stories on the silver screen.
Whether you saw it live on Sunday night or saw it later on the Internet, everyone and their mom knows that Kanye announced he will be running for U.S presidency in 2020. The announcement came at this year's VMAs during Kanye's acceptance speech for the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
When 21 year old Little Simz unexpectedly took the stage earlier this year at a Mass Appeal SXSW showcase during Salva's DJ set, few members of the crowd reacted. She interrupted a set that was otherwise comprised of hit after hit (skillfully blended, I might add), brought out by the DJ to perform a quick verse that almost no one in attendance was familiar with.
The Weeknd dropped his highly anticipated second studio album this past Friday. After a long year of straight success, headlining music festivals like Coachella and riding the top of the charts, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd really shows us another side of himself with his latest project, Beauty Behind The Madness.
Business moves quick, and that's no exception for the rap world. From the hottest new signings, to movie deals, to album pushbacks, the industry is constantly in motion. It can be hard to keep up with at times, so we've consolidated all of the must-hear information from the past month, all in one place.
Rick Ross's last couple albums have left something to be desired. With Black Dollar coming out this Thursday, hope springs eternal that he'll regain his peak form. Despite his pear-induced weight loss, Ross is about to turn 40 years old, potentially on the downslope of his rap career and in need of boost.
There has been no artist in our culture that has had a more storied four years than The Weeknd. The Scarborough, Canada native currently sits in a pop music position that he probably never had imagined himself in. When House Of Balloons dropped in March of 2011, no one knew who or what The Weeknd was.
This is a moment to be proud of. A Top Ten filled with almost all new music, and not from a select few artists. Well, there is the matter of one very predictable champion but...you know what? Let's get to it. 10) Tyga - Scandal
While the 2015 VMA's had its share of fireworks, it was quite the vanilla affair.
Canadians are everywhere nowadays. It's safe to say that Drake has opened up the door for many Canucks to be heard, especially within the R&B/hip hop crossover style. The Weeknd skyrocketed to fame after working on Take Care, and PARTYNEXTDOOR seems to be blowing up ever since he started making music with Drizzy.
If you’re on this website, you probably already love Late Registration. Kanye West’s second album came in a much simpler time of his career. He wasn’t trying to change the world via fashion and design, nor was he married to a reality TV star. In 2005, Kanye was just an up-and-coming superstar with an ear for samples, an MPC to chop ‘em up on and some great lyrics.
The MTV Video Music Awards are upon us. The popular cable network has definitely changed drastically over the years - putting its once eponymous ‘Music’ on the backburner. Their flagship award ceremony acts a nice bit of nostalgic entertainment for the channel, still a celebration of the year in music.
The N.W.A. cart takeover is far from over. this week, nit only did Dr. Dre's new album (and accompaniment to the film), Compton, maintain its position at the top of the rap charts, but both the group's seminal album, Straight Outta Compton, and Eazy-E's effort, Eazy-Duz-It made it into the top 40.
In last week's edition of "28 Grams," E-40's "Slurricane" line of adult beverages continued to expand its sphere of influence. This week the rapper continued his global takeover by announcing a new 40-oz malt liquor called, naturally, "E-40." Of course, there were other, lesser good things that went down in Instagram this week -- the Fiddy v.
It's that time of the week again. As we make our way into the weekend hours, literally, it's almost 5 PM here on the East Coast, we've readied a new Staff Picks playlist to jam.
The Weeknd's Beauty Behind the Madness is out today, and there were a ton of talented hands on the project. Of course, you know the megastars like Kanye West, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey, but there are also a slew of lesser known producers and writers that helped to shape this massive 2015 release.
