Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Jay Rock are all forces to be reckoned with on their own, but when they come together like Voltron to form Black Hippy, it's something truly special. A full length project from the group has always been hinted at, but it seems things are still up in the air at this point. In a new interview with SkeeTV, Ab-Soul spoke of how Black Hippy came together, as well as his idea that the group could take the reigns on Dr. Dre's long-delayed album, Detox.
“I’m trying to tell [Top Dawg] to tell Dr. Dre to just let us make Detox," said Soulo of his idea for the group to revive the project. "Wouldn’t that be crazy? The Black Hippy album should be Detox.”
The rapper then went on to explain how the crew was formed, indicating that while Q came up with the name, it was actually Top Dawg, TDE's CEO, who decided to get the rappers together. “[Black Hippy] is just an idea to bring all of our audiences together and creating a collective that would trap all of our fans [into one group],” said Soul.
The Control System emcee then expanded on his relationship with the fellow members “We’re really brothers,” he shared. “We all really want to see each other do well. As much as it is friendly competition—I do want to be the best rapper in the world, too—it’s in the same way I want Kendrick to be the best, I want to see Q be the best. It’s a real interesting feeling but I think that’s what kind of keeps us all in line.”
