It's holiday season, and that means it's time to start rolling out the year-end lists. There was almost too much good music to handle, as notable releases week after week meant that only the hottest tracks were able to attain a shelf-life of longer than a couple of months.

The Weeknd rose up as a largely anonymous kid from Toronto who released three epic mixtapes in 2011. March, August and December each held a release date for this dude who was mixing sounds of electronica, hip-hop, dubstep, R&B, downtempo and soul in a way that had never been done before.Well, it worked. In November of 2012 The Weeknd reissued the three mix tapes on the Triology release which donned his face on the cover. He was no longer an anonymous kid from Toronto, he was now a certified star and, in many ways, a sex symbol.

Here Are Travi$ Scott's First Week Sales For "Rodeo" Sep 12, 2015 at 09:32am
It was tough to gauge how much Travi$ Scott's "Rodeo" would pull in its first week. It seemed to have an immense amount of hype, but internet excitement doesn't always necessarily equal high sales numbers, especially for a debut album -- plus, he didn't have a big single. However, Scott pulled through, moving a solid 74,941 copies of his LP, with streams beefing that number up to 90,940.

Review: The Weeknd's "Beauty Behind The Madness"
Review: The Weeknd's "Beauty Behind The Madness" Aug 31, 2015 at 07:05pm
There has been no artist in our culture that has had a more storied four years than The Weeknd. The Scarborough, Canada native currently sits in a pop music position that he probably never had imagined himself in. When House Of Balloons dropped in March of 2011, no one knew who or what The Weeknd was. He was, literally, a faceless voice that made music about the raw realities of being a young man growing up in a small, drug-driven, lust-crazed environment.

Mixtapes are like opinions. Everyone has one, but not all of them matter. Your mixtape should be a totally uninhibited creative space. A platform where you can impulsively exhibit your talent for a more focused and passionate audience. The mixtape is a very reliable vehicle for hip-hop, especially in the digital era where free information spreads feverishly. In some cases, artists give away music that is significantly more awesome than their commercial releases. It just depends.

After the endless outpouring of memes following Drake's "Hotline Bling" video, it seemed certain that Drake would finally have his first number single on the Hot 100. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, as Billboard has announced that The Weeknd's "The Hills" will take the top spot once again.

First Week Sales Projections For The Weeknd's "Beauty Behind The Madness" Aug 28, 2015 at 05:50pm
The Weeknd had an ideal ramp up in advance of Beauty Behind the Madness, putting out some monster records in "Earned It," "The Hills," & "Can't Feel My Face" (plus appearing on Ariana Grande's megahit "Love Me Harder") that elevated the public profile of the album and promised to give its sales a hefty boost. Early projections now have BBTM headed for a first week with 250,000 sales, according to HDD.

Betweeen "Can't Feel My Face," "Earned It," and "The Hills," The Weeknd was already dominating the charts before Beauty Behind the Madness even came out. But few could have predicted the utter dominance that has gone down since the album dropped -- every song on the album has spent time on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Top 50 as of the most current (Sept. 19) edition.

Drake talks a lot about his accomplishments (though he'll claim otherwise), and while he has a Grammy and a hundred Hot 100 placements to his name, he's still not able to brag about topping the Billboard singles charts -- because he never has. "Hotline Bling" is the closest Drizzy has come to claiming the top spot (as a lead artist) since "Best I Ever Had" in 2009, and -- as he shared on Instagram recently -- he's hoping that this is the one to go all the way.
