The Weeknd rose up as a largely anonymous kid from Toronto who released three epic mixtapes in 2011. March, August and December each held a release date for this dude who was mixing sounds of electronica, hip-hop, dubstep, R&B, downtempo and soul in a way that had never been done before.Well, it worked. In November of 2012 The Weeknd reissued the three mix tapes on the Triology release which donned his face on the cover. He was no longer an anonymous kid from Toronto, he was now a certified star and, in many ways, a sex symbol.

Kanye West will be the lone feature on The Weeknd's forthcoming album, according to English pop star Ed Sheeran. Sheeran revealed the information during an interview on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show earlier this week. He regaled Lowe with a story about the time he got white girl wasted at a party at The Weeknd's house in Toronto during his current worldwide tour. He said The Weeknd told him to come back the next day so that they could write a song together.

Some things are the same. Drake and the Weeknd were known not only for showing a whole lot of "Crew Love," but also being a pretty unstoppable songwriting team, as evidenced by some of the best moments on Drizzy's Take Care (otherwise known as rap's Songs In The Key Of Life).

Mixtapes are like opinions. Everyone has one, but not all of them matter. Your mixtape should be a totally uninhibited creative space. A platform where you can impulsively exhibit your talent for a more focused and passionate audience. The mixtape is a very reliable vehicle for hip-hop, especially in the digital era where free information spreads feverishly. In some cases, artists give away music that is significantly more awesome than their commercial releases. It just depends.

It was yet another unpredictable week on the charts, with Meek Mill being dethroned by none other than -- Tyrese? That's right, the veteran R&B star turnt Furious 7 actor has landed his very first number one with his sixth studio album. Meanwhile, Meek Mill keeps the units moving, sticking close at the number three spot. Drake comes in at 9, while the other rap albums were shut out of the top ten once again. As we already know, Future is set to top next week's charts, which will make for yet another consecutive week where a rap or R&B album reigns supreme.

Last night (March 19), The Weeknd headlined YouTube's SXSW showcase and treated fans to some new music. The new song, reportedly titled "Mood Music", is produced by Million $ Mano, who was Kanye West's former tour DJ. As far as the "mood" on this one, it's typical XO: late-night/early morning (depressed) vibes, with enough bass to be a club staple. We're not sure "Mood Music" will appear on The Weeknd's next album, but going off the snippets we've heard, it will likely be his next single.

With his debut album on a major label, Kiss Land, now slated for release on August 27th, it's a good time for fans to learn a little bit more about the r'n'b singer.

We know that The Weeknd is not considered hip hop, but you can't escape Kiss Land as a great production piece. The Weeknd is known to be one of the new faces of R&B and Drake's go-to guy for an R&B feature. With no surprise, you'll also find Drizzy Drake featured on this project on "Live For." Out of the 10 tracks on Kiss Land, not counting the bonus tracks, we found 5 were sampled by other artists.
