Crew Love: Strange Music
Crew Love: Strange Music
Strange Music has proved itself to be a very successful indie label. A little while back we got a look behind the scenes of the company's Kansas City headquarters, which revealed it to be an expertly run business, but of course, it would be nothing without the talent, who introduce themselves in our newest edition of Crew Love.

Tech N9ne digs into his Strangeulation II compilation today for another new music video. After giving us the Asian-themed visuals for "PBSA," this video takes it theme from Cheech and Chong and transports us to the '70s.

Lil Wayne once said "Man, I got so many flow, I am a group," and Tech N9ne may have just taken that concept to the next level, giving us a solo cypher from his upcoming collaboration project Strangeulation II. It seems weird that the first cypher on a collabs album wouldn't feature any other artists, but what can we say, Tech is a STRANGE kinda dude.

Tech N9ne and the Strange Music family are dropping off their second Strangeulation compilation album on Friday, November 20th. Today they've dropped off a new music video for "PBSA" off the album, which features affiliate CES Cru. Tech is always coming correct with video concepts, and this one is a bit left field for him but it's entertaining to say the least. The music video, which seems to be inspired by Japanese culture, features Tech and CES busting some karate moves as they both take on a ton of opponents, one after one. Watch it above.

Tech N9ne dropped off the audio for this record the other week, and he's quickly returned with its visual component. The collaboration with Rittz and Darrein Safron will appear on Tech's upcoming Strangeulation Vol. 2 compilation album, due out next month. Tech gives us a glimpse at his version of partying, which apparently includes three chicks in lingerie having pillow fights, lathering each other up, and getting cozy with Tech on a king size bed.

Taking pause amidst his push towards his next album Strangeulation Vol. 2, Tech N9ne throws it back with a video for "No K," standout record from 26-track Special Effects. "No K" has shades of a Bay Area banger and Tech N9ne briefly employs a cadence similar to E-40's on "Choices (Yup)," which is apt because the track features E-40 as well as Strange Music affiliate Krizz Kaliko.

Strange Music CEO Travis O'Guin On How To Succeed As An Independent
HNHH sat down for an illuminating interview with Strange Music CEO Travis O'Guin to discuss his history with Tech N9ne and what it takes to be successful as an independent artist or label. A successful businessman in the furniture and real estate industries, O'Guin recognized that Tech N9ne's talent was being mismanaged and partnered up with him to form Strange Music around 2000. A believer in the Japanese business philosophy that the middleman should be cut out, O'Guin built a Strange Music studio and started making all merch in-house.

Tech N9ne's Strange Music label has evolved into something bigger than he ever could have imagined. In fact, we weren't even sure just how huge it was until we got a tour of the label's headquarters from Korey Lloyd, the Publicity Coordinator and Project Manager at Strange. Lloyd first took us through the massive merch warehouse, showing off the unconventional artist-branded items (all the way down to light switches). We then get a look at the many touring vehicles, the ritzy executive offices, and "The Wash," a spot where fans can come by and clean up their whips.

Tech N9ne & Seven
A few weeks back, HNHH took a trip down to Kansas City, Missouri to get an exclusive look at Strange Music Headquarters and talk to the main forces behind the flourishing label. Two of them, Tech N9ne and Seven, are responsible for Special Effects, which just had the highest-ever first week sales for any of the label's albums. We sat down with them to discuss their beginnings, musical philosophies, recent work together and plans for the future.

Earlier in the week we gave you a sneak peak at Stevie Stone's official music video for his "Rain Dance" single, featuring the Strange Music boss, Tech N9ne, and Mystikal. Now we're ready to premiere the visuals, which keep in theme with the song's sound, produced by Seven.

When rappers decide on nostalgic titles for albums, they'll often choose the names of streets, landmarks or neighborhoods from their childhood, but Stevie Stone wanted to go back even further. His new album Malta Bend (in stores today) is named for the tiny Missouri town where his parents met, and we were lucky enough to sit down with him at Strange Music HQ to get the scoop.

Chris Webby's debut album, Chemically Imbalanced, came out last November, but he's still pulling hits off the LP for videos. His latest puts him together with Strange Music's Tech N9ne and Funk Volume's Jarren Benton, each with their own cult following. Paired with Webby's own loyal fanbase, there's a pretty wide audience for this one. All involved do what they do best, each turning their own animated style of double-time rap.

Murs
Since Murs released his last album, 2012's Yumiko: Curse of the Merch Girl, a lot has changed for him, namely a move from a major label to an indie. Thankfully, though, his new album arrives two weeks after his label boss debuted at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100-- no small feat for any indie artist. Murs' Have A Nice Life drops this week on Tech N9ne's Strange Music label, and recently, we got a chance to chop it up with him. In it, he offers a description of the album's title:

To promote his new Special Effects album, Tech N9ne has been making his rounds at various media publications and outlets to conduct some interviews. For his latest sit-down, Tech visited Jen Deleon, of SkeeTV, to talk about what advice he’d give to his fans. His answer? Happiness. “The goal is to be happy as fuck.” “You can’t live life angry. Whatever you do, find that happy for you, because the negative shit has to go away, you don’t need it in your circle”.

Just one look at Tech N9ne's Special Effects tracklist will tell you it's the Strange Music rapper's most varied effort yet. Working with members of Slipknot, Eminem, 2 Chainz, and many more, every song functions as a different experiment. "On The Bible" is an Atlanta-leaning track, featuring a Dancehall-infused hook from Zuse, as well as T.I. greeting Tech N9ne's challenge with some impressive double time.

Tech N9ne's upcoming album, Special Effects, has a pretty eclectic lineup of features, but one look at the bill for "Hood Go Crazy," made it clear it was the party record of the bunch. Unsurprisingly, it's also been chosen as the single, and the new video for the track lives up to the fun-loving vibe of the song. You can't have a party without a good ratio of women, and as Tech told us in a recent interview, this video is a far cry from a sausage fest. Tech's new album is due out May 4th. Get prepared.

A month before Murs drops Have a Nice Life, the L.A. rapper gives us the video to "No More Control", his latest single. "No More Control" is a piece of "educated street music", which features Fools Gold artist MNDR singing the hook. The song, and the video, says Murs, is a response to the proliferating violence both inflicted upon and within minority communities. "I think the majority of the opportunity for change is still in our control."

Tech N9ne
Tech N9ne's been building his brand as an independent artist for years, but he still manages to expand his horizons with every new release. While he's always put his fellow underground rappers on, more recently, he's been reaching out to some bigger names to record with (or also quite often, they've reached out to him).We sat down with the rapper as he broke down some of the biggest collaborations he's been involved with, explaining how he got to work with rappers such as Wiz Khalifa, T-Pain, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, and more.
