Good news for Slaughterhouse fans, although maybe not exactly the news we’ve been hoping for. Slaughterhouse leader Royce Da 5’9” has announced his sixth solo studio album Layers. It will be released on April 15th of this year under Bad Half Entertainment.

When Crooked I announced a new project entitled Sex, Money & Hip-Hop a couple of weeks ago, it was originally believed to be a mixtape, but now it looks like it'll be rushed commercial release. After hearing what feels like every other rapper on the planet remix "Hot Nigga" (we posted freestyles from Ace Hood, T.I., Gunplay, and Lil Kim in the past 24 hours alone), we can officially add Slaughterhouse's Joell Ortiz to the Bobby Shmurda hype machine. In an exclusive interview with ThisIs50 radio, Ortiz praised Schmurda for bringing his music to the streets, saying he's displeased with how "shiny" hip-hop music has become.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

In the hip-hop industry, there are four kinds of artists: those who have crossover appeal, those who don’t, those who choose not to, and those who shouldn’t. Slaughterhouse, as a collective and as solo members, simply shouldn’t. Crooked, Royce, Budden and Ortiz could be raking in commercials deals right now, dropping radio hits with Bruno Mars and releasing studio albums once a year—they have the talent to do it—but that would be a misuse of their abilities.
