The Best Hip Hop Songs (On Spotify) Of July 2016
HNHH recently launched a Spotify playlist called FIRE EMOJI: The Hottest Hip Hop Songs Right Now. The playlist is updated on a daily basis. It lives on Spotify and thus is inherently imperfect, because not all super-hot hip hop songs have been added to Spotify. Still, the playlist is generally representative of the best new releases in hip hop.
Charts Don't Lie: July 27
Drake is once again at the #1 spot with his fourth studio album VIEWS. The record continues to thrive, and although "Once Dance" was bumped from the #1 spot, he doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down soon. Rihanna, Beyonce, and ScHoolboy Q all join Drizzy in the top 10 of Billboard's 200 chart, marking a solid showing for R&B and hip hop on the charts this week.
Top Tracks: July 18 - July 24
Last week, Chance The Rapper, Big Sean, Future, and Mike Will Made It all found themselves victims of unauthorized leaks, and subsequently spoke out about the all-too-common occurrence in the music industry.
14 Rappers Who Play Pokemon Go
Whether or not Pokemon Go is a fad or a permanent institution, it has captured the hearts and minds of people around the globe. Rappers are not immune to its powers, and many have taken to the streets on their quest to catch 'em all. Of course, there are just as many detractors as there are addicts. Charlamagne tha God recently anointed Pokemon Go players his “Donkey of the Day” and many rappers share his sentiment that the game can be dangerous and is a distraction from larger issues at hand.
Charts Don't Lie: July 20
It's a pretty good week for rap artists on the Billboard charts. Drake was able to reclaim the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 from previous owners Blink-182, and ScHoolboy Q managed to fend off the pop-punk band as well, nabbing a very respectable #2 debut with his new album Blank Face LP. Rihanna and Beyonce's respective albums continue to thrive in the top 10, while Bryson Tiller, Kevin Gates and Maxwell find spots in the top 20.
9 Ways Hip Hop Artists Have Reacted To Recent Violence
The fiber of the American people has been tested over the course of the last two weeks, in which four incidents of terrible violence have prompted wide-spread protests and rapidly deteriorating race relations. July 5: Alton Sterling is shot and killed at the hands of two police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana July 6: Philando Castile is shot and killed by a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota July 7: Five police officers are shot and killed at a protest in Dallas. July 17: Three police officers are shot and killed in Baton Rouge, LA.
ScHoolboy Q Shares "Blank Face" World Tour Dates
Beginning at the end of August, ScHoolboy Q will tour the world in support of his new album, Blank Face LP, which dropped earlier this month. He just let loose all the dates on his social media accounts, and what a jam-packed latter half of the year it shall be for the Hoover Street rapper. There are a total of 63 dates on the tour, which kicks off in Indianapolis on August 30. He then goes throughout most of the U.S., barely taking a day off, and on November 3, he'll fly across the world to New Zealand for the first of six shows in Oceania.
Top Tracks: July 11 - July 17
I'm not going to take the time to crunch all of the numbers for the 28 weeks of 2016 we've experienced thus far, but in terms of artists who show up most often in our weekly top ten tracks list, it's not even close. Drake is the clear victor, seeming to find a way on here every week. Second place is a little more murky.
ScHoolboy Q's "Blank Face LP" Debuts At No. 2 Behind Drake's "VIEWS"
As was projected earlier this week, ScHoolboy Q's new album, Blank Face LP, has made its debut at No. 2 on the albums chart that includes sales plus streaming. Q's new album has ceded the top spot to Drake's VIEWS, released at the end of April, which has now spent a total of 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. Last week, VIEWS fell to No.
ScHoolboy Q's "Blank Face LP" By The Numbers
ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP is the kind of album that requires multiple listens, and close listens at that, the kind where you are really doing nothing else besides listening to the music-- that's actually a difficult feat in today's day and age of millennial constantly-wired-multi-taskers.
#TBT: Early ScHoolboy Q
ScHoolboy Q benefited early in his career from his association with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. The fearsome foursome known as Biack Hippy cultivated a supportive yet competitive atmosphere, not unlike that of sports team (possibly the Spurs), that pushed Q, the last member to join, to great heights. Look where he is now; his new album Blank Face LP is one of the best albums of the year to date.
First Week Sales Projections For Schoolboy Q’s “Blank Face”
It looks like Schoolboy Q’s sophomore album, Blank Face, will finish runner up to Drake’s Views in the sales department this week.
ScHoolboy Q's "Blank Face LP" (Review)
"Every album I was dropping from Setbacks, to Habits, to Oxy, everybody was like, 'What's the album about?' It's like bruh, can I drop it first?"
My Diamonds They Say Pikachu: 10 Pokemon References In Rap Songs
Whether or not you're playing, you've surely heard of Pokemon Go -- the latest addition to the Pokemon universe for iPhone and Android. The augmented reality game has already spawned countless memes, and strangely, a few instances of robberies, but for the most part, people seem to be loving their ability to catch Pokemon in the real world.
ScHoolboy Q Explains Why A$AP Rocky Isn't On "Blank Face LP"
During a brief Twitter spree Tuesday morning, ScHoolboy Q revealed the reason that his old partner-in-crime A$AP Rocky didn't make the cut on Blank Face LP. It sounds like they cut a song for the album and it was produced by Pharrell -- but Pharrell gave the beat to someone else. "PHarrell gave tHa beat away," Q explained. "Hopefully da person dnt use it so I can put it out." Q and Rocky never fail to deliver when they link up: "Hands On The Wheel," "Electric Body," & "Brand New Guy" come to mind.
Here Are The Samples ScHoolboy Q Used On "Blank Face LP"
ScHoolboy Q might be a synesthetic -- he sees sounds in color. Kendrick Lamar's GKMC is purple and yellow, he's said. His own albums have been black and grey, as reflected in their cover art.
Top Tracks: July 4 - July 10
Even on the very rare occasion that Drake doesn't show up in our top ten tracks of the week, his presence is still felt. In this case, he's directly responsible for three separate tracks in the top ten, whether that entails remixes or disses aimed at him.
ScHoolboy Q Speaks On Possibility Of Black Hippy Album
At the end of last week, ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP hit shelves and online retailers, somehow avoiding the constant threat of an internet leak.
10 Essential Sounwave Productions
Sounwave is one quarter of Top Dawg Entertainment’s in-house production unit the Digi-Phonics. Although deeply respected in the hip hop production community, he rarely strays outside the confines of TDE's roster of artists, and even within TDE he collaborates with Kendrick Lamar more than anyone else (although he did produce three tracks on ScHoolboy Q's new album Blank Face LP). Along with Terrace Martin, he was one of the chief architects of To Pimp a Butterfly's sonic universe.
Vote: Who Had The Best Verse On The Black Hippy "THat Part" Remix?
Last night, ScHoolboy delivered not only his new album Blank Face LP, but a scintillating Black Hippy remix of his single "THat Part." The absence of a Black Hippy cut on the tracklist was troubling; fortunately, ScHoolboy remedied the situation for the fans.
