Feb 9, 1984 it was time for Maria Abreu son to meet the world she named him Gabriel Salcedo or as we know him Nino McFly. His family descended from the Dominican Republic but he started his journey in New York by way of Washington Heights. Throughout the course of his life he didn’t always foresee a future in rapping. Since he was 5 years old he wanted to join the NBA and live the American dream. He was actually quite good at basketball, often noticed by the neighborhood kids. Because of his skills on the court he was even envied by the older kids. He was a well rounded young man, not only did he play basketball with the best he also took piano lessons and played the drums from time to time, nothing too serious because his focus was basketball. During the 5th grade mother’s day festival Gabe really discovered his love for music. He sang the song “Mama” by Boys II Men and dedicated it to his favorite lady in the whole world, his mother Maria. There wasn’t a dry eye in the gymnasium, definitely tears of joy and appreciation as this little boy sang his heart out. He loved the feeling of performing, he got a rush like none other but he knew singing wasn’t for him and continued to focus on basketball. As a freshman in Jr. High school he started writing his own verse to hit records. At lunch time he would recite a verse to the song he choose for the day. His peers liked it so much whenever there was a new song on the radio they would ask him “did you do your version yet”? He became known on campus for rapping to hit records and he was good at it. 8th grade year after a basketball game the coach Ras Baraka took the team to Lauryn Hill’s house. They recorded interludes for her album “the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. After such a great opportunity Gabe knew what he was called to do. But dreams are not always easy to attain, even though he wanted to get into music he started selling drugs while in Junior High school. Growing up in New York wasn’t easy. It didn’t matter what type of family you came from nothing was more appealing than fast money. Nino got sucked into the fast life like most of the guys his age. When his mother found out she moved the family to Florida hoping her son would get a new beginning. With the high school days were fast approaching and Nino wanted to make a name for his self in his new city. He wanted to be know both on the courts and in the rap game. So he started playing ball every day and started ghost writing for different artists. Then reality started to set in for this young man his close friend injured his knee. All the offers to play basketball at the college level went down the drain right along with Nino’s dreams. He didn’t want to put any more effort into something that could be taken away at the blink of an eye. Now that basketball was out of the picture Nino started on a downward spiral so he started to write as an outlet. While he was hustling he earned the nick name “Nino McFly”, Nino because he was compared to Nino Brown and McFly because of the way he dressed. He moved back and forth between Florida and New York and on 9/11 he got kicked out of school with a .000125 grade point average. His mother kicked him out of the house and at 17 he moved into his own place. Despite everything he was going through he decided to take control of his own life. He went back to school and would graduate from Northeast High School with a 3.25 grade point average. Nino McFly was back and better than ever he was more focus than ever as he started on his rise to fame. He was admired by his classmates, loved by the ladies and hated by his opponents but was respected by all. Not only was he one of the top/well known rappers in his school he also took up modeling, and did several photo shoots and ads for the “Million Dollar Baby Society.” He started writing more everyday. Although he was still ghost writing, he finally started writing for himself. After not speaking to his mother for 5 years he found out that she had cancer. At that time he put his life on hold and moved to North Carolina and took care of his mother for 8 months. Seeing his mother again changed his life and he grew even more as a man. After a little hiatus Nino knew it was time to get back to work. In 2007 Nino went to Virginia to do some recording. After spending 4 days straight in the studio he decided to head back to his room, completely exhausted he fell asleep behind the wheel. When he woke up he was in the intensive care unit. He found out that his car was completely wedged under an 18 wheel truck and only the jaws of life were able to save him. His life was spared and from that day on he vowed to live his dream, to write some of the best lyrics Florida has ever seen. 2008 his first mixtape was released titled “Paid in Full” and the Myspace response was overwhelming. There was completely positive and overall the album got an excellent review. He started doing numerous shows like the Nike Dunk Exchange, Miami Night Cap TV and Winter-fest in Oklahoma which had some very well known lyricist Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana and Yung Berg to name a few. He fit in so well with different people because musically he made songs that everyone could relate to. He was never afraid to put emotion on a track. During his life he endured so much and overcame adversities he has a lot to rap about. With much SUCCESS off his "Paid In Full" mixtape in late 2008 many wonder
what will be the next step for Mr. Nino McFly. Many rumors were floating
around that he have signed to Young Money or Konvict which he denies
quickly. Since the release of "Paid In Full" Nino has been ghostwriting for
other well known artist and working on "Young, Pretty, & Heartless" and also
his untitled debut album. Young, Pretty, & Heartless has been PUSHED BACK
since May 09 but the wait is OVER he claims which he also added timing is
everything and what better day to release it than on Valentines Day. YP&H
includes original features from Akon, Lil Twist of Young Money, Rihanna, and
Sean Kingston and will be hosted by none other than the infamous DJ GQ.
In late 2010 will be the official launch of his record label. Everyone has heard the saying all work and no play…that would make McFly go crazy. So outside the studio he goes shopping, watches Saturday morning cartoons, play’s ps3, traveling across the country and cooking gourmet Italian meals and he stays on the internet. To be McFly you have to display charm, confidence, style, wit, sharpness and creativity…or you just have to be “Nino”, the only McFly
