Top Tracks Of The Week: February 3 - February 9
After a few paltry weeks, we finally have a chart we can be proud of. Good on you, HNHH fam. Our Top 100 chart contained a number of notable tracks this week. These are songs that generated a lot of interest, whether it be through comments or views, and still deserve a second look or a deeper consideration.
Nas "Not Surprised Cops Still Murdering People"
Nas has always been one to say how he feels. From speaking on the conditions in the streets of New York on his classic debut Illmatic, to speaking on his personal life in his latest album, Life is Good, Nas has been somewhat of an open book in good times and bad. In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Nas was asked if, due to his history in New York, he was surprised cops are still killing innocent people.
Chance The Rapper, Nas, Mike Tyson Featured On Madonna's "Rebel Heart" Album
Madonna had the inconvenience of having demo versions of half of her album leak late least year, causing her to rush release 6 tracks well before the release of the album. At the time, Madge had not even secured a final tracklist, but today, she's released the official selection.
Review: Fabolous' "The Young OG Project"
Fabolous has always done a solid job at blending in with his environment. Whether he’s cutting with DJ Clue and The Neptunes in 2001 or jiving with Rich Homie Quan in 2015, he’s done a phenomenal job at adapting to change and staying relevant, something that is easier said than done.
Samples Of The Week: January 1 (Fabolous Edition)
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
Nas: The Fact That The US Is Still Fighting Over Race Is "Embarrassing"
It's no secret that Nas cares deeply about the "Black Lives Matter" movement that's risen in the wake of Michael Brown and Eric Garner's murders, as he was out protesting with Russell Simmons in NYC on Saturday.
Nas & Russell Simmons March In NYC Protest
Yesterday in New York, the "Millions March" protest against police brutality took place. The March comes in wake of the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Akair Gurley, and Tamir Rice, all black males who were killed by police officers over the last couple of months. The turnout for the protest was tremendous, with estimates of 50-100,000 people in attendance. Among the activists were Nas, Russell Simmons, and Def Jam Vice President Kevin Liles, their presence being documented on social media.
#TBT: AZ's Early Cuts
Brooklyn-born Anthony Cruz isn't one of the 10 greatest rappers of all time. He hasn't released a platinum record and most of his accolades are due to a relationship with Nas. However, most critics who know their stuff will tell you that AZ is vastly underrated, and even albums like Illmatic would have suffered had he never picked up the mic.
Nas' Daughter Launches Lip Gloss Line Called "Lipmatic"
In 1994, we got the seminal hip hop classic, Illmatic, 20 years later we have lip gloss' answer to the record, Lipmatic. That's right, a new makeup line has launched with a name inspired by Nas' debut record, and it's none other than Nas' own daughter behind it.
#TBT: Nas' Portrait Albums
Nas' first four albums famously wore portraits of the MC in a different light. He was a kid on Illmatic. He was an adult on It Was Written. He was a pharaoh on I Am... He was Nostradamus on Nastradamus. The uniformed imagery paired with the super-strong material he was laying down creates a consistency that no other MC has matched. Not to add fuel to a dead fire, but Jay Z's Volumes just weren't quite as strong as Nas' first four albums...let's face it.
Samples Of The Week: November 6
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey". This week, see who Nas, Wu-Tang Clan and Rockie Fresh sampled on their recent tracks, all of which can be found on HNHH.
Nas Previews New J Dilla-Produced Single
Run The Jewels are earning critical-acclaim from just about every major publication for their new Run The Jewels 2 LP, but the biggest story to come from their fan appreciation night came from an entirely different hip-hop act: Nas. Dropping by the venue to support his Mass Appeal signees, the Queensbridge emcee offered some words of wisdom to Mike & Jamie before offering to preview his new single for all of the lucky attendees.
Pete Rock Releases "Time Is Illmatic" Mixtape
Legendary producer Pete Rock has teamed up with all of the original producers featured on Nas' Illmatic for a brand new mixtape. Titled after the film of the same name, Time Is Illmatic is forty minutes of remixed glory.

Bishop Nehru may have just dropped his new album with MF DOOM, NehruvianDOOM (which we reviewed here), but he's already got his next project lined up, with assistance from one of rap's living legends.
Dave East Signs To Nas' Mass Appeal Label

Nas To Release New Music Within A Week, Maybe Sooner
As if his new documentary wasn’t enough to be excited about, Nas fans can now look forward to hearing new music from the legendary Queens emcee "very soon". On Tuesday afternoon, Nas made his way over to the Angie Martinez Show to promote his upcoming documentary Time Is Illmatic, and while there he ended up revealing some exciting news regarding upcoming music. When Angie asked Nas when his new material would arrive, Nas responded, “Real soon.”

The rapper is prepared to take Illmatic XX on the road for a tour, alongside a screening of his Illmatic documentary. The North American tour kicks off in October in Rochester, NY, and heads to Washington D.C., Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles and more before wrapping in Oakland on October 19th.

Back in May, we announced that Nas' new Mass Appeal record label imprint would be releasing a compilation featuring the label's first signees. A few months later, a picture of the label is a bit clearer with the knowledge of Boldy James, Bishop Nehru and Fashawn's signing, and now we have a release date for the compilation.
Nas Offers Kendrick Lamar Advice On Following Up A Classic Album
Few rappers are as well-equipped to talk about classic albums than Nasir Jones. With almost twenty years of experience in the game and at least four generally-regarded "classic" albums, the Queensbridge emcee is just about the best mentor an up-and-comer could ask for.
