As it turns out, Yasiin Bey's (Mos Def) forthcoming album Dec 99th won't be his last. During an interview At Art Basel with WRL, Bey revealed that he will release two additional albums before he retires at the end of the year.
Mannie Fresh Previews Unreleased Lil Wayne Song, Possibly From "Tha Carter V"
A new song from Lil Wayne has been previewed by Mannie Fresh on the DaTakeover podcast, and it seems it may come from Tha Carter V sessions. Mannie, who worked with Wayne throughout his early Cash Money releases up until the first Carter, played 2 minutes and 30 seconds of a song called "Start This Shit Off Right" on the show. The song is produced by Fresh and features his vocals.
Staff Picks Playlist (November 25)
Hip-hop fans, before we let the music take us away on this Friday night, let's say a prayer for Kanye West, who, instead of spending the holidays with his young family, is in the hospital (allegedly) due to a state of psychosis induced by high levels of stress and exhaustion. Understandably so. Could anyone live a life of such vast ambition, under such constant scrutiny, and maintain his or her sanity? Yes, his ego has proven to be too big for his own good many times over, but through it all, he's never let his lust for greatness drown out his love for humanity.
Are Lil Wayne & Mannie Fresh Working On An EDM Project?
Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh have a rich collaborative history, but Cash Money drama meant they were separated for years. Now that Weezy has turned his back on Birdman, he and Mannie are one great terms once again, and on top of working on a few collaborative tracks over the last year or two, they're apparently in the midst of doing something completely different for them.
10 Joint Projects That May Or May Not Come Out
For every Watch the Throne or What a Time to Be Alive, there are scores of joint hip hop projects borne of one epic late night in the studio that never crystallize into a fully formed release. As fans, we should know better than to let these glimmers of collaborative greatness get our hopes up. But the possibilities are too great to ignore.
#TBT: Big Tymers
The Big Tymers released their last album thirteen years ago. But Mannie Fresh and Birdman are still the golden standard of strictly-for-stuntin' music. Evidence: the hook on Nef the Pharaoh's breakout hit "Big Tymin'": "Ooh, I'm ballin' like Baby/ These bitches they wanna have my babyI'm fresh like Mannie/ That's why a fuck nigga can't stand me"
BTS Photos: 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's Video Shoots For "Gotta Lotta" & "MFN Right"
2 Chainz and Lil Wayne's ColleGrove has been one of the year's most enjoyable projects, and a few of its tracks should continue to blow up and dominate the summer.
Mannie Fresh Explains Healing Lil Wayne & Birdman's Conflict With "Hate" Collab
After a hostile $51 million feud that spanned the entirety of last year, Lil Wayne and Birdman were spotted at the same party on New Year's Eve. Then, they were both seen in the studio with Yo Gotti, and then, at the end of February, they were heard on the same track, "Hate," which also features Juvenile and is produced by Mannie Fresh -- the whole Hot Boys lineup, aside from B.G. and Turk.
2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's "ColleGrove" To Drop At Midnight
Kanye shared the album artwork yesterday, and today, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne dropped the first single off their joint album, ColleGrove.
Top Tracks: February 22 - February 28
Other than some resurfacing beefs (between Young Thug and The Game, and Rick Ross and Birdman, respectively) and the beginning of what is sure to be another drawn-out, highly-publicized Kanye West album rollout, it was a relatively quiet week, especially as far as full-length releases went.
Quiz: Which Cash Money Member Are You?
Remember, as recently as a few months ago, when we all were all speculating on the inevitable decline of Cash Money? Then, Wayne and Birdman partied together on New Year's, and earlier today, Mannie Fresh put out a collab between himself, Lil Wayne, Juvenile, and even Baby, and damn, that 9th ward sound is alive and hot as ever.
Lil Wayne, Juvenile & Mannie Fresh Reportedly Working On Joint Album
We've recently caught a few posts on Instagram showing Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh in the studio, getting us excited for whatever it is they might be working on. As it turns out, that could very well be a joint project which includes another Cash Money OG: Juvenile.
#TBT: Birdman's Early Singles
Before all of the bad press, the head tattoos, and the kiss with Lil Wayne, Birdman was just Bryan Williams. Born in New Orleans in 1969, the rapper first made waves in the mainstream with Mannie Fresh as the duo Big Tymers.
Review: Lil Wayne's "No Ceilings 2"
After announcing his retirement via a poem the other night, Kobe Bryant took the court to face the Indiana Pacers for the second-to-last time in his career. He alternated between flashes of brilliance and moments that made his decision seem logical, ending up with a 13-point performance that was far cry from his glory days, but respectable for your run-of-the-mill NBA starter.
Lil Wayne's "No Ceilings 2" Tracklist Revealed
After hitting us with a trailer to increase the anticipation and excitement for No Ceilings 2 last night, Weezy F returns this afternoon with a tracklist, so we know it's real. The highly anticipated mixtape will serve as a follow-up to the much-beloved first No Ceilings, and thus it's got quite a reputation to live up too. The tracklist is stacked though, so let's hope Weezy didn't spare quality for quantity.
In the world of southern hip-hop, there's only so many artists that have sold 10 million or more records. Juvenile is a part of that class. With eleven (solo) albums in total, Juvenile is also one of the more consistent MCs of the past 25 years.
Lil Wayne's "Lil Weezyana Fest" Will Stream Exclusively On Tidal
As soon as Lil Wayne's Lil Weezyana fest was announced, it was speculated that the event would be streamed exclusively through Tidal, who premiered the rapper's FWA album. This hunch was called into question when Birdman filed a lawsuit against the streaming service, claiming they didn't have the rights to host the rapper's music. While the status of that suit is still unclear, it seems the legal battles haven't soured Wayne's relationship with Tidal, as they are going ahead with the stream of his upcoming Hot Boys reunion.
A Brief History Of Birdman Ripping People Off
Cash Money don Birdman was recently hit with a $200,000 lawsuit by producer DVLP, who claims he was never paid for his work on Lil Wayne's music and music by other Cash Money artists. Despite assurances of "I'm getting yu paid" and "I'm working with yu fam," Birdman never delivered the goods.
Lil Wayne Performs In Miami, Hands Out "Free Weezy Album" T-Shirts
We wish we had been in South Beach last night. Young Money's showcase at the Red Bull Guest House weekend was capped off by a headlining performance from Lil Wayne. Weezy was the last to hit the stage at an all-day pool party that featured DJ sets by Questlove, Hudson Mohawke, and Mannie Fresh. Mannie also got up on stage during Wayne's set, so we hope that's a signal of a future collab from the two (former) Cash Money brethren.
Juvenile Shares His Thoughts On Birdman/Lil Wayne Situation
This past October, Juvenile returned to the label he was raised on by inking a deal with Cash Money. A few months later, the turmoil began between Lil Wayne and Birdman, and by extension, Young Money and Cash Money. Weezy has since sued Birdman for a hefty sum, and it doesn't seem like a resolution between the former partners will happen any time soon. Unfortunately, that means that quite a few artists on their roster are stuck in the middle.
