This week on hip-hop: Labels, labels, labels. Either because the record heads can't get it together or the artists don't want to play the game, the past couple of days saw two rappers at odds with their respective labels. Chief Keef is on the verge of getting dropped from Interscope.

Flying Lotus has been making brain-melting beats for about a decade now. The LA-based producer lives in the underground, but as the electronic music world has exploded, his music has gained the acclaim of critics and casual music listeners everywhere. FlyLo made some huge waves in the blogosphere when news broke that he is in fact Captain Murphy, the enigmatic, cartoony, deep-voiced, laughing hip-hop personality that released the Duality mixtape a couple years back.

We live in strange times — times where 42-year-old OGs beef on Instagram with Australian pop rap artists in their 20s. This ain't fiction: Snoop Dogg and Iggy Azalea were going at it. The "beef" had one artist recalling one that she had with another OG from the south. Also, one rapper tweeted his version of "Control." Yep, it's been an odd year for hip-hop.

The good news is that this week saw the release of Flying Lotus' You're Dead and Tinashe Aquarius. One is arguably one of the top three albums of the year and the other is a really good R&B album. But good music doesn't stop the world. As such, rappers have to continue to do rapper things.

Ferguson. The ALS Challenge. Rihanna apparently still banging Drake. "Anaconda" threatening the drown America in thirst. Etc., Etc. There wasn't much new material to come out of the hip-hop community, but the artists still had plenty to talk about and cause controversy over during the past couple of days.

Mac Miller Reveals Collaboration With Your Old Droog Jul 20, 2014 at 12:33pm
Your Old Droog made quite a splash with the release of his self-titled EP earlier this year. The rapper's well-crafted style of underground rap was enough to garner some attention, but the uncanny resemblance to Nas' voice was what got people really talking.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

Today marks the culmination of the strangest rap career genesis this country’s ever seen, one that has included an MTV reality show, a hip-hop trio name Three Loco, OG Ron C, a Harmony Korine film, a slew of investigative articles and perhaps most importantly, about as much hate as the internet can muster.

Superman isn't Superman if he inexplicably switches from superpowered do-gooder, to some sort of motorcycle-riding anti-hero, to maniacal villain, and back and forth between the extremes. Such mythology is a big part of the hip-hop culture, as well as proper marketing. Any marketing novice and comic book savant knows that consistency is key to building one's image/brand. A rapper who constantly switches up can lose a fan base or market, or even worse: he or she gets labeled as a fake for wearing different styles (there's nothing worse than not being real).
