I Am Music. The title of Lil Wayne’s 2008-2009 national tour needed no further explanation. Wayne, who had just released his Grammy Award-winning album Tha Carter III, had the rap game on lockdown. Using binoculars, it still would’ve been hard to see stragglers such as actor-turned-rapper Drizzy Drake in Wayne’s rearview. Drake, who hadn’t yet released his 2009 breakthrough mixtape So Far Gone, was still a no-name rapper to the greater half of the hip-hop community. Fast forward five years later, oh how the tables have turned.

Dijon McFarlane, aka DJ Mustard, is a Los Angeles born and raised producer of seemingly all of the most important tracks you’ve heard over the past year. While that statement is obvious hyperbole, his influence on the rap stratosphere is not, and cannot be overstated. When you have producers jack what you’ve made hot, for another artist (cough, Iggy Azalea), with no shame, it means you’ve made serious waves.

Lil Wayne certainly has more than enough money to rent a private jet, but it hasn't stopped him from missing almost a million dollars in payments. A company is now suing the rapper over a G-1159B Gulfstream jet he leased for $55,000 a month. While the payments arrived on time for the first year, they suddenly stopped, which has forced the company to ask for a million dollars in compensation. The plane was apparently decked out with "satellite phones, a custom bed, and medical equipment."

Rappers are storytellers of the modern age. The media often misunderstands these narrators of society, but future generations will recognize them as windows into the past. Truly talented rappers have the ability to connect with people through their words, which may or may not be written down prior to the stage of recording. Some argue that the work of rappers who do not scribble down words beforehand is better than those that do.
