    When A Kid Named Cudi first began making the rounds in late 2008, it seemed to appeal to people of all musical backgrounds, with Kid Cudi rapping over a decidedly wide variety of source material. There were instrumentals cribbed from backpacker favorites Outkast and J Dilla, but also ones from little-known electronic producers and Pacific Northwest indie rock bands, setting Cudi apart from his competition in the online rap world.

     Nothing too new is going on in the game this past week. In other words, hip-hop is just going right now. And that's not bad: Vince Staples is alive and still hating on Chris Paul, Jay Z still knows how to tweet, Meek Mill is still free and he's #woke. Common and John Legend won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song ("Glory" from Selma), but other than that, things have been a 40 degree day. The tweets are still fire though.

    As soon as Kid Cudi surprise-released his new album Satellite Flight, people started saying he'd "pulled a Beyoncé", something that was also said the Air Yeezys dropped, so it's only a matter of time before Beyoncé just becomes a synonym for "surprise". Whether or not Cudi did take a note from Bey was a valid question however, and it's one he addressed in his recent interview with Complex.

Today North Coast Music Festival, which takes place in Union Park, Chicago, announced their line-up, which includes notable rap acts like Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg, Riff Raff, Action Bronson, Alex Wiley, and ProbCause. Other acts include DaDa Life, BassNectar, Cashmere Cat, Bad Bad Not Good, SBTRKT, Little Dragon and more.

    We've seen Kid Cudi's acting chops in the now-cancelled "How To Make It In America" as well as an appearance on "The Cleveland Show," and while we await new music from the rapper we'll be seeing him act once more in a Fox comedy, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." The comedy centers around a diverse group of detectives in New York City, and Cudder will play an ex-con by the name of Dustin Whitman, whom Jake (played by Andy Samberg) believes robbed a jewelry store. You'll be able to catch him in the third episode of the new season. The TV series premieres on September 17th on Fox.
