If a rapper’s collab. roster is any indication of his talent as an artist, The Notorious B.I.G. reached an astounding level of respect from his peers in his career. Though his 1997 death left behind only two studio albums, colleagues and friends went on to put out three more posthumous albums and extend his legacy well into the present landscape of hip hop. Biggie’s raps have appeared alongside everyone from Jay-Z, to Michael Jackson, to Eminem, and his songs continue to be sampled regularly by the new school rappers taking over the charts in the present day.

In a career that spans two decades, eleven solo studio albums, a number of chart hits, and years of financial success, Jay-Z is definitely one of the greatest of all time. He now co-owns a NBA team in his native Brooklyn, he has altered the hip hop landscape numerous times, and as other artists have faded away, he has consistently been relevant, both culturally and musically.

There's quite a bit of repetition in the game these days, and specific lyrics tend to get overlooked (with the exception of open rap letters from Jay-Z). This is an opportunity to take a closer listen and really consider what these artists have to say. We encourage your opinions.

On Saturday, Jay-Z, in his annual tradition, celebrated the GRAMMYs a day early at what must be one of the most exciting brunches known to man. This year, Roc Nation artists have together tallied nine nominations, which would be no easy feat for labels other than the highly regarded Roc Nation.  From comedian Kevin Hart and the elegant Rihanna to T.I. and indie-songstress Grimes (not to mention a chipper-looking J. Cole) the brunch certainly seemed like the place to be last Saturday. However, while the atmosphere seemed celebratory, the GRAMMY awards still await us.

In the competition between the same-day release rappers Juicy J and Big Sean Juicy J appears to be taking the lead, although Sean debuted stronger than Juicy initially. Not to say they both haven't fallen quite a few spots-- they have. However Juicy J's fan base remains more persistent that Sean Don, with Stay Trippy selling another 21k at #15 and Hall Of Fame selling only 18k at #24. Will we see Juicy J remain stronger than Sean over a longer period of time?

Blue Ivy Carter celebrated her second birthday in spectacular fashion this past Tuesday (1/7). Jay Z and Beyonce decided to rent out Miami’s Jungle Island, which is an amusement park that includes a wildlife park and botanical garden, for their daughter’s once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Park officials are keeping their costs under wraps, but it's gotta be pretty damn pricey to close down the entire park. Look at it this way, the VIP safari tour for just one person costs $240.

2 Chainz has done collaborations with just about everybody in the rap game. II: Me Time, recently revealing fans will get a cookbook with the deluxe edition. In a new interview with the rapper though it sounds like the time for a Hov feature has not arrived just yet.

The trend of surprise albums has definitely caused a shift in the traditional method of releasing music. Interviews, music videos and singles are still protocol (well, usually), but we’ve watched the likes of Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye West, Skrillex, J. Cole etc. trade customary release dates for something a little more exciting and spontaneous.

The rapper is in London for a four-night stint at the O2 Arena, and yesterday he decided to take the tube to his show. By the time Jay Z had released 1996's Reasonable Doubt, he had already been a known entity in the streets of Brooklyn for a while. What with his tracks with Jaz-O and Big Daddy Kane and his popular battles with LL Cool J, Shawn Carter was on fire before the rest of the world knew who he was. Today, Mass Appeal has dug up a demo tape from Jay's earliest days, and you can listen to it below.
