Engineer Attempts To Extort Jay Z For 100k Over Master Recordings [Update: Engineer Responds To Accusations]

Jay Z was under the impression that he'd lost some very important masters from 1998-2002-- until he was recently approached by a sound engineer to buy them back. The recordings-- which are valued between $15-20 million --had been missing since 2002, but it turns out a man named Chauncey Mahan had possession of many of them at his storage facility in Northridge, Ca.

21-year-old Vic Mensa can now look at his haters and say, with impunity: "Oh u mad, huh?" He just signed with Roc Nation Records, the label owned by Jay Z, and that's a big deal for a guy who only has a mixtape and EP to his name (or any guy, really). He'll join J. Cole. Rita Ora, Jay Electronica, Willow Smith, DJ Mustard and Rihanna on the record label. Hova announced the news via Twitter today; view his tweet below.

Kanye West cut his teeth producing records for the likes of Jay Z, but has since left his mark as one of the greatest rappers of the past 15 years. His influence on rap music and culture top notch, only to be met by the top dogs in the game. While Yeezus has received mix reviews, the first three albums are pretty unanimously heralded as some of the finest hip-hop music in our lifetime. With countless hits, including "Jesus Walks," "Gold Digger," "Stronger" and so many more, these records launched Kanye West in to the mainstream at light speed.

Memphis Bleek was always Jay Z's right hand man, but despite his massive co-sign he never really broke through. The two have remained friends throughout their careers either way, and Jay displayed his loyalty to Bleek very openly on his verse from Kanye West's "Diamonds" remix.

Is it desperation or gratitude? That's the main question we have once learning that Jay Z has been personally calling some random Tidal subscribers to thank them for using his service. Business Insider spoke to an executive within the company, who said that Jay, Jack White and other "high-profile musicians" have been calling up users.

As Drake said after he concluded his first interview with Nardwuar, a Canadian man who rocks a tartan hat and calls himself the "Human Serviette," "this guy is a legend." There's really no better way to put it: this guy's interviewed everyone from Nirvana to N*E*R*D, and always seems to unearth facts that no other interviewer in the game can. His earnest personality can throw some artists for a loop, but it doesn't take long to realize that despite the quirks, this man is one of the best in the business.

Jay-Z's upcoming new album was announced basically two weeks prior to its release, which doesn't give much time for promo leading up to it, at least in the usual way of things. Hov and Ye both seem set on doing things differently this time around. We received a second commercial in support of Magna Carta Holy Grail yesterday, which showed Hov in the studio with Timbaland, as they work on the album, but still, details are scarce.

Drake has been all over the site for the past week as he does interview on top of interview to promote his new album, Nothing Was The Same, turning it into a veritable DrakeWeek on just about every blog. One of the more anticipated interviews was his sit-down with Elliott Wilson for the CRWN series. The latter half of the interview dropped today, and in it Drizzy discusses in more detail three particular records off his new album. Drake even gets his not-often-heard producer, Noah '40' Shebib, to come out to say hi and talk about what it's like to work with the rapper.

This is pretty crazy news. Chris Rock's upcoming film Top Five, which he wrote, directed and starred in, is set to be co-produced by two of hip-hop's biggest names. Yes, Jay Z and Kanye West (or "The Throne" if you will) are serving as co-producers on the film, which also counts The Roots' Questlove as its executive music producer.

The first time I ever heard Fab was when I was 12. I heard “Can’t Deny It” and realized  that he was beyond nice. You see, Fabolous is a gladiator. You can throw him in the octagon and he’ll walk out unscathed. I always refer to him as the Vince Carter of rap because at any moment, he could unleash an array of tricks that could leave you in awe. Fab is an extraordinary talent that can mesmerize you with his pen game. Lyrically, he’s been as consistent as anybody else in the rap game. Every time he drops a bar, you’re liable to do the ugly face.

It's that time of the year again - Valentine's Day! The romantic holiday is upon us and we thought we'd share some of the love in the hip-hop community. Love and hip-hop doesn't have to be synonymous with ratchet behavior and baby daddy / momma drama, although you may be under a different impression if you've ever watched a full episode of VH1's Love & Hip-Hop.

TIDAL is still new, and we'll continue to become aware of its benefits in the coming weeks and months. Rihanna and Beyonce have already debuted exclusive songs on the streaming service, and it's only fitting that de facto leader Jay Z should move his entire catalog to TIDAL--and away from Spotify.

The 10th annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is going down today in Williamsburg, and so far, Jay Electronica's set was the most surprising. Jay Elec performing alone in itself is quite a rare sight, but the elusive rapper made sure to up the ante of his set with a few big name guest appearances.
