Illmatic turns 21 years old today, and since we can't buy it a drink, we've decided to take a look at 21 rappers who were influenced directly by the album. We did some digging to find quotes, interviews, lyrics, and examples of artists praising Nas' debut album, a record that changed hip hop forever.

Before a Ghostface Killah show in Toronto last Thursday night, reporters asked the Wu-Tang co-founder about Canada's biggest hip-hop export to the world: Drake. Drake's recent mixtape (that's being sold as an album) If You're Reading This It's Too Late hit number one on the charts last week.

Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is a certified classic, depending who you're talking to, it could be viewed as the greatest Wu-Tang solo project (though it's almost cheating considering Ghostface is on nearly every track). It also gained the rare honor of a legitimately great sequel, with 2009's OB4CL2, but as the 20th anniversary approaches this year, Rae has one more surprise for fans of the project.

Ghostface Killah goes by many names: Ghostdini, Iron Man, Tony Starks, Pretty Tone and any slang-derivative of 'em is pretty much fair game. Despite the identity crisis, Ghost has always been reliable for putting out quality music. The Staten Island MC, whose real name is Dennis Coles, is well-known for his witty slang and impeccable story-telling, all of which has weathered two decades of prolific output.

Ghostface Killah’s new LP 36 Seasons comes to us just one week after the release of Wu-Tang Clan’s A Better Tomorrow. While the latter LP received lukewarm reviews due to questionably experimental tracks, 36 Seasons is the exact opposite. It is concise and precise, using that classic Wu sound to march along an incredible story line while The Revelations provide the production.

The remix. It can mean a lot of things. Today it usually means a trap or house DJ took a tune and chopped it up for the dance-floor, but there was a time in hip-hop where the remix was an opportunity to invite old friends and make new ones over a celebrated beat.

Ghostface Killah and DOOM, who've been talking about doing a joint album together for at least three years, will purportedly be releasing the long-delayed DOOMStarks project in 2015.

It's been seven years since the Wu-Tang Clan released their last proper album, 8 Diagrams, but of course, that doesn’t mean the members of rap’s greatest clan have been prepping for an early retirement. Not by a long shot.  Since 8 Diagrams, there have been a number of efforts from Clan members, most notably records by Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and Method Man. While the three collaborated on 2010’s Wu-Massacre, they have also been involved in a variety of other projects.

Many of hip-hop's most classic albums have one thing in common: they were all produced (mostly) by one man. Dr. Dre, J Dilla, the RZA, Kanye West, Madlib, and many more have all laced MCs with a collection of beats that create a cohesive aesthetic through which full LPs can thrive. Singles and one-offs are cool, but to compile 10+ tracks and keep it dope the whole way through makes you a master of hip-hop.

Flume is one of the most exciting figures in dance-music culture, and it isn't even because he wants to be there. The Australian producer has carved his niche in the beat scene by making tunes big enough to get main stage approval. Not an easy task inn 2014.

In the late 80s, a few cousins got together to form a little rap crew in Brooklyn, New York. Robert Diggs, Gary Grice and Russel Jones, better known as Rza, Gza and Ol' Dirty Bastard respectively, had no idea what kind of world-changing journey they were about to embark on. They were simply teenagers who enjoyed kung fu, hip-hop and probably a little weed smoke. Fortunately for us, the All In Together Now Crew were the roots of what became the mighty Wu-Tang Clan, in all their profound glory and cringing controversy.

For Ghostfac Killah fans, the "best album" debate is a heated one. There's the charismatic debut, Ironman, the return-to-form Fishscale, and I've even heard some boom-bap die-hards pull for last year's 12 Reasons To Die in the argument -- but Supreme Clientele, released in 2000, is usually the winner. That's why fans of Tony Starks ' solo work should rejoice in this news: Supreme Clientele 2 is in the works.

Few can disagree that Wu-Tang Clan has made a huge impact on rap music. The Clan, built up of it's main members RZA, GZA, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Ghostface Killah, U-God and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard were successful not only as a supergroup but also in many of their respective solo careers.

The inspiration rappers have drawn from comic book characters over the years is undeniable, whether it be superheroes, villains or relatively normal protagonists who happen to find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Some have even created comic books based on fictionalized versions of themselves, most notably the Wu-Tang Clan as a whole as well as individual members Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, RZA and GZA.
