It's a combination of rap fans' thirst for beef and media's thirst for clicks that often turns ordinary statements into "shade". In the case of J. Cole's "Fire Squad", the speculation around a line made the rounds before many even heard the song themselves.

Over the years many rappers have ventured into acting and usually watching them act on the big screen is excruciating or downright funny. But sometimes there are rare gems where that rapper surprises you and goes beyond expectations to show off a stellar performance. Through the years plenty of rappers have taken to the screen in an effort to chronicle their lives, a big noteworthy tour, a moment or a behind-the-scenes look into their real lives.

It's been well over a decade since Eminem reveled in the center of seemingly every fiery controversy in popular culture. Never before had an artist dragged so many bystanders into his path of destruction. His assaults were ghastly, yet outstanding displays of rhyme, cadence and character. In the years of his prime, many would step foolishly into his crossfire, while others simply had it coming. The rest caught stray bullets.

Eminem Turned Down A Leading Film Role Because It Wasn't Shot In Detroit
    Jul 18, 2013 at 07:54pm
It seems Eminem turned down a leading role in the upcoming Hollywood science fiction film "Elysium" because his native city of Detroit wasn't chosen as the film's primary location. The lead role was instead given to Matt Damon, who was actually director Neil Blomkamp’s third choice. South African rapper Ninja of Die Antwoord (who was Blomkamp’s first choice) also turned down the role due to its location. Marshall is in no rush to return to Hollywood, though, as he made clear in a recent interview with Rap Fix.

Tim Westwood may not look like your average hip-hop personality, but the 57-year-old gangly white dude, always rocking a different color polo, is an industry legend, and he's been there from the beginning. In the late 80s, Westwood was one of the first DJs in Europe to play hip-hop on mainstream radio. As host of the revolutionary BBC Radio 1 Rap Show, started in '94, he became arguably the #1 importer of American hip-hop to the UK and beyond.

Eminem isn't the most media-friendly or public person, however, a lot of what he wouldn't share in an interview comes out through his lyrics. Thus we've often heard Eminem rap about drugs, whether it's when he was taking them consistently, or when he was trying to sober up. For the documentary film by Matthew Cooke "How To Make Money Selling Drugs," Eminem spoke on his past drug addiction, shedding light on a near fatal overdose in 2005.

5 Times The Grammys Got 'Best Rap Album' Wrong

With the Grammys coming up this Sunday, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the times they have upset us, the hip-hop community, the most. Because nobody is perfect and the Grammys are certainly no exception.  While there are a few time they got the 'Best Rap Album' right (and we will take a look at the flip side of this list later today, so keep an eye out), there have also been quite a few instances where they picked the absolute wrong album, upon general consensus.

In music we tend to glorify the debut album, always craving the newest and shiniest thing out. The downside of that is usually we're slightly disappointed in the follow up sophomore album, possibly what led to the phenomenon known as the "sophomore slump".

Soooo, I was assigned an article about tracing the origin of a lot of the flows in hip hop to different regions around the country. Originally, I thought that would be fairly easy to do, and to a certain extent it is, but the article really went in a different direction the more research I was doing. While there are clear regional influences in today's music, it's almost minimal in the grand scheme of things. Hip Hop as a genre was born in New York, did a lot of growing up out in California, and has even spent some formative years in places like Houston, Chicago and Miami.

Dr. Dre had one of the more memorable ice bucket challenges we've seen thus far, and the hip hop mogul decided to pass the task on to Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem. We saw K.Dot's video earlier in the week, and now Eminem has taken the plunge-- on stage at The Monster Tour no less. That's right, Em got the very special honor of having Rihanna douse him in ice water, for which he quickly returned the favor. From the footage we've seen, it's not clear who the two stars have challenged, but chances are they've picked some high profile candidates.
