Eminem & Rihanna Do The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge On Stage In Detroit
    Aug 24, 2014 at 12:43am
Dr. Dre had one of the more memorable ice bucket challenges we've seen thus far, and the hip hop mogul decided to pass the task on to Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem. We saw K.Dot's video earlier in the week, and now Eminem has taken the plunge-- on stage at The Monster Tour no less. That's right, Em got the very special honor of having Rihanna douse him in ice water, for which he quickly returned the favor. From the footage we've seen, it's not clear who the two stars have challenged, but chances are they've picked some high profile candidates.

It's been well over a decade since Eminem reveled in the center of seemingly every fiery controversy in popular culture. Never before had an artist dragged so many bystanders into his path of destruction. His assaults were ghastly, yet outstanding displays of rhyme, cadence and character. In the years of his prime, many would step foolishly into his crossfire, while others simply had it coming. The rest caught stray bullets.

In music we tend to glorify the debut album, always craving the newest and shiniest thing out. The downside of that is usually we're slightly disappointed in the follow up sophomore album, possibly what led to the phenomenon known as the "sophomore slump".

After covering rappers and a producer in our first couple instalments of Top 10, we decided to combine the two for this week's. In the past decade especially, the producer credit has gotten it's fair share of the spotlight, whereas before, the role was much more in the background. With increased exposure, comes increased opportunity to capitalize on it.

This weekend Eminem made history by becoming the very first rapper to headline Wembley stadium. In fact, he performed two sold out dates in a row at the 90,000-capacity venue, and he made sure to bring some friends along for the ride. The biggest news from the show was Dr. Dre's surprise appearance, showing up to perform a medley of hits, including "Still D.R.E.," "Next Episode," "Nuthin’ But A G Thang" and “Forgot About Dre." The stadium show also boasted opening slots from fellow Detroit rapper, Danny Brown, and students of Em's early horrorcore records, Odd Future.

Today, we take enjoyment from the misery of others. It's no secret that most artists experience creative highs at their personal lows. Sadly, there's nothing like a good travesty to really make someone look deeper and pull meaning from their experiences--unless you're Robin Thicke; then it's just an opportunity to embarrass yourself in front of a nation with an album filled with contradictory lyrics and lazy instrumentals (sorry, Robby, I'm still a fan).

Guest features have been an important part of hip hop throughout its history, and have become increasingly popular in recent years. It's a great way for artists to cross promote between each other's fan bases, as well as give each track a signature shakeup for a verse or two. The only problem with letting other rappers spit, is once in a while they body you on your own shit. See what I did there? Here's 10 of the best times it happened, with a few that just missed the cut.

If any rapper was going to shatter a windshield by banging their head, it would be Busta Rhymes. The "Break Your Neck" MC is clearly a fan of the violent head bang, and in a hilarious new interview, he reveals that the dance move once decimated the entire windshield on Wyclef Jean's tour bus. The music that spurred on this incident? Eminem's Slim Shady LP, obviously.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

Some of the earliest criticisms of Eminem centered around his many references to his daughter Hailie, who was just a toddler when songs like "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" (the lyrics of which had Em taking her and her recently-murdered mother out for a drive) first dropped. If Em's original detractors were to be believed, this girl's life was in danger of being ruined, but now it seems that quite the opposite has happened. Hailie Mathers, now 18, has graduated her high school with top marks and is headed to Michigan State University.

Soooo, I was assigned an article about tracing the origin of a lot of the flows in hip hop to different regions around the country. Originally, I thought that would be fairly easy to do, and to a certain extent it is, but the article really went in a different direction the more research I was doing. While there are clear regional influences in today's music, it's almost minimal in the grand scheme of things. Hip Hop as a genre was born in New York, did a lot of growing up out in California, and has even spent some formative years in places like Houston, Chicago and Miami.
