Julian Council better known by his professional name Epik, is an American record producer, songwriter and rapper. He has produced for artists such as Waka Flocka, Raekwon, Jim Jones, Sophia Fresh, Ghost Face Killa, Crooked I and Huey among many other. Epik has created a massive internet buzz for himself. He has over 15 million plays and 1.8 million hits on his website.
Epik was born in Huntington, Virginia and grew up in different states across the US. Places like DC, PA and AZ being raised by a single Mother. His Father didn’t enter his life until later in his childhood and Epik settled with him and his wife in Los Angeles soon after when he was 11. It didn’t take long for turmoil to start from now being raised by a Father he hardly knew. To help alleviate his pain Epik would sit in his room with headphones on and listen to Power 106 for hours and just listening to music. He would also save his allowance to buy CD’s and study the music, rhythm patterns, drum beats and the creative process as a whole.
Epik’s father saw what his son was doing and wanted to help lead him in this more positive direction. So he took Epik with him to one of his AA meetings which were being held at the home of Randy Thomas (Producer of Rose Royce- Car Wash). Randy had his son take Epik to the back and show him the STUDIO and from that point on he knew what he wanted to do.
Epik went on to hone his craft but still found his self in and out of trouble. This caused him to get expelled from Hamilton High School and the LAUSD and landed him in Job Corps. But this turned out to be more of a blessing than a curse. Job Corps is where Epik learned how to use a drum program called Hammer Head. He says, “I use to sit in the computer rooms at Job Corps for hours using Hammer Head making retarded drum loops. Then one day this kid walks in and hands me this CD that says Fruity Loops”. This was his first glance into the world of music production!
Coming from such humble beginnings and having strong influences from the likes of Just Blaze, Dr. Dre, Timberland, Hi-Tek, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dr. Luke, Epik is well on his way dwell among the greats. In his own words Epik says, “In the end I just want to have the same effect on the industry as Barry Gordy. I won’t stop until I can create something as good as or better than the Motown Effect”. Very strong words spoken from the 25 year old who has only been producing for 7 years! However, with his work ethic, ambition, talent and persistence Epik is sure to achieve it all soon enough!
