Drake & Kanye West React To The Death Of Alton Sterling
Following the death of 37-year old Alton Sterling, who was senselessly gunned down by ANOTHER police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this week, the hip-hop community has once again expressed their incredible outrage & disbelief on the matter.
Charts Don't Lie: July 6
Almost every release listed below actually moved up on Billboard 200 this past week, an impressive statistic that bodes well for the likes of Bryson Tiller and Kanye West, who both jumped up at least 15 spots over the 4th of July weekend. Without any new releases in the top spots, the list looks pretty familiar, but there were a few new records in some of the chart's higher spots. Peach Panther by RiFF RaFF debuts at #69, DJ Shadow's new LP is at #77, and Blood Orange comes in at #185, in terms of R&B and hip hop-related releases. ...
Top 5 2 Chainz Features Of 2016
2012 was a monumental year for 2 Chainz, as the rapper's titular ad-lib was impossible to escape, whether on his countless features or massively successful solo singles. After release of his debut album under his new pseudonym (never forget his long stint as Tity Boi), Chainz became a little less omni-present, instead choosing to broaden his range and make a bid as an album artist. This phase made for some of his best work to date, including the eternally underrated BOATS II, and his experimental Freebase EP.
Joe Budden To Meek Mill: "Watch A Real MC Do What You Couldn't"
After he criticized Drake's VIEWS and caught what he perceived to be a subliminal diss on "4pm In Calabasas," Joe Budden decided to go after Drizzy on his diss track, "Making A Mur
Drake Has Tied A Michael Jackson Chart Record
However you may feel about Drake's 4th studio album, VIEWS, it is on pace to be his biggest commercial success yet. The album and its lead single, "One Dance," have, together, refused to budge from their perches atop the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts for the last 7 weeks, tying Michael Jackson's 1983 run, which makes him one of two male artists to do so.
Top Tracks: June 27 - July 3
As opposed to a winter and spring that found a lot of repeat appearances in our Top Tracks list, summer's been more of a free-for-all, with quick week-to-week turnover as everyone seeks to land a summer anthem. Sure enough, we've only got two returning tracks from last week's list, and following another big recent trend in this feature, both involve Drake. Drizzy's got fingerprints on three of these ten tracks, as does Future, a sure sign that the What A Time To Be Alive team are still comfortably the hottest in the game.
4th Of July Playlist
However you may feel about the Fourth of July, chances are you'll be spending at least part of your day off with friends and family, watching some fireworks, and very importantly, listening to music. There's no better way to celebrate than with some great tunes -- as even President Obama will be spending the evening taking in a White House concert performance from Janelle Monae and Kendrick Lamar this evening. As there will be many barbecues to soundtrack today, we've put together a Spotify playlist with some of our favorite summer records from 2016 so far.
Drake's "VIEWS" Achieves Third Most Weeks At No. 1 Of All Hip-Hop Albums
Drake's latest album, VIEWS, hasn't been among the most well-received projects of the year by Internet critics, but sales-wise, it's murdering the competition. Released at the end of April, VIEWS is about to enter its ninth consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. With its ninth week at No. 1, VIEWS now ranks third on the list of hip-hop albums that have spent the most weeks at the top of the chart.
The Top 20 Projects Of 2016 (So Far)
In the midst of a year that was already challenging peoples' definitions of mixtapes, albums, and "free" projects, Chance The Rapper asked, "Am I the only n*gga who still cares about a mixtape?" On the surface, it made sense-- Chance is one of the few top-tier artists who've never sold a single copy of his internet-only projects-- but as his latest, Coloring Book, was released exclusively via a deal with Apple Music, both his independent claim and the definition of "mixtape" were subsequently scrutinized.
Drake Unveils Full OVO Fest Lineup
Now in its seventh year, OVO Fest has become one of the biggest events and tourist attractions that the Toronto summer has to offer. About a month before the 4-day extravaganza, Drake has unveiled the full OVO Fest lineup.
Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh Wants Recruits To Know He's Cool, Lists His Top 5 Drake Songs
Jim Harbaugh, the head football coach at the University of Michigan is one of the most unique, polarizing head coaches in the sport, or in any sport for that matter. The quirky, passionate, mad genius eats, sleeps and breathes football but he also wants his players and recruits to know that he's also hip with the time. Take for instance his recent announcement on twitter, where he proclaimed that he "wasn't a fake" and proceeded to list his Top 5 Drake songs.
Charts Don't Lie: June 29
While Drake's VIEWS remains unmoved from the #1 spot (sorry YG), there were still a few switch-ups this week with hip hop albums on the Billboard 200. YG made his debut with Still Brazy at #6, a precocious new LP from the California gangster rapper. Fellow Cali native and mainstay, The Game, debuted at #25 with his soundtrack "Streets of Compton," which coincides with an A&E documentary of the same name.
DMX Explains How He Gained Respect For Drake On The Breakfast Club
In the past, DMX has not been shy to share his negative feelings about Drake, candidly revealing that he didn't like Drake's music, his face, or his haircut on a 2012 Breakfast Club appearance -- so it was pretty surprising to hear him sampled on "U With Me?" from Drake's new album, VIEWS. The rapper returned to the Breakfast Club today to explain how that all happened, and how the experience changed his opinion on Drizzy for the better.
Sampha Covers FADER, Performs New Song
FADER is getting ready to launch their Summer issue, which -- as is the annual tradition -- features four cover stars rather than the usual two. After revealing the first three featured artists and their accompanying stories (Rae Sremmurd, PNL, and Vince Staples), the magazine has now announced its final cover, which is graced by London singer Sampha.
Photos Emerge Of Drake's Bodyguard's Alleged Assault On Detail
In one of the more unexpected lawsuits these past few weeks, producer and Young Money/Cash Money affiliate Detail, sued Drake over an alleged assault by his bodyguard, dating back to 2014.
Top Tracks: June 20 - June 26
Summer officially began this past week, and with it came a whole bevy of huge tracks, most of the biggest ones being collabs. There's something decidedly warm weather about the low-stakes posse cut, and that's mainly what our list consists of this week. All but two of these ten tracks didn't appear on last week's Top Ten, with a bunch of stuff falling off in the past week.
Tory Lanez On Drake: "We Can't Share First Place"
Tory Lanez almost had no voice left, but still managed to sit down with Hot 97's Ebro in the Morning for an interview. The rapper has evidently been going hard on his "Level Up" tour with ASAP Ferg, a pre-cursor of sorts to his debut album I Told You.
Joe Budden Previews "I Ain't Drake" Diss Track
The unlikely beef between Drake and Joe Budden continues. It all started when Budden harshly criticized Drake's latest album, VIEWS, shortly after its release on his podcast. It now looks like Budden is ready to release what -- going off the 30-second clip -- sounds like a Drake diss track.
Drake Is Worth About $3 Billion To Toronto, Study Says
Toronto was hardly a blip on the hip-hop map before Drake came along. In fact, the city's presence in pop culture -- and even in sports, too -- has greatly increased since he decided to put the 6 on his back. The 6 God loves his city, and it loves him back, but just how well Toronto fared under the focused diplomacy of one of the world's biggest pop stars?
Drake Got Hooked Up With Some "Kentucky" OVO Air Jordan 8s
Drake is a member of Kentucky's Big Blue Nation (BBN) so it's only fitting that he got laced with special edition Kentucky x OVO Air Jordan 8 PEs. We first saw Drake debut the kicks way back in February but apparently there's more in existence as evidenced by the pairs showcased by sneaker collector, @BigKTheBoss. As you'd expect both "Home" and "Away" Kentucky x OVO Air Jordan 8s are decked out with Kentucky blue accents and the iconic ovo owl stamped on the pull tab.
