Cozzy, born Aaron Antione Costen isn’t your usual up and coming rapper. A few years in the game, with only one mixtape to his name, he’s already been signed to a record label and been nominated for Best Rap Album of the Year by the Independent Music Awards.
Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, his musical foundation began as early as he can remember. From playing the piano in Elementary School to picking up the alto saxophone in Middle School and transgressing to writing and recording in High School, music has always been a natural effort.
Cozzy is some-what of a generational name. With his father known as “Big Coz” among family and friends, “Lil Coz” was his natural born nickname, turned into “Cozzy” for short as he aged. It was the approval of Big Coz that propelled him to pursue music full-time. “My dad has always been stern about laying a foundation in this real world by getting an education and a good job afterwards,” said Cozzy. “So when I got his approval for my liking and ambition in music, I knew I could start taking this dream of mine public. I had all the support I needed.”
Falling in love with hip-hop after hearing the Geto Boyz’ “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” he took to the mic for the first time many years later, recording his first song over Lil’ Boosie’s “Wipe Me Down.” Relatively, he considers his music “hip hop with a country soul,” mentioning his love for all forms of hip-hop from old skool to modern-day trunk music.
His Uncle, Tobin “TC” Costen (Manager of Master P and Vice President of No Limit Records) was one of his biggest influences. After initially being turned down from him following his first recorded music, he gained his respect years later after perfecting his craft and was signed to his label immediately.
Respectably compared to the likes of Nate Dogg, Devin the Dude, and Big Krit, Cozzy ultimately steps into his own lane with his unique lens of life in general; from introspective eyes of the world to party anthems and everyday struggles.
Currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, he’s promoting his upcoming album “The Storm” due out this year (2013). Following up his first release, “The Calm before the Storm,” he’s eager to show all he has to offer. On his dedication to creating music, he stated: “I motivate myself with the help of the world.” Now he’s just waiting for the world to respond to the art he throws back.
