The Best Prison-Released Gucci Mane Tracks Of 2015
    May 20, 2015 at 06:39pm
Gucci Mane has released nine projects this year. We don't have to check-- that's more than any other rapper. He also happens to be in prison. Last year, he released 14 projects from the pen, making a cool $1.3 million, and he's on pace to topple those numbers this year.  He's feeding his fans, he's feeding the streets-- though who knows if he's actually the mastermind behind any of this. No matter when these tracks were actually recorded, they're still among the hottest out.

Chicago artists are already winning as it is, but when they get together, it's truly something special. Jeremih-- whose recently been showing up everywhere but on his own songs --showed up on Lil Durk's long overdue slow jam, "Like Me," earlier this year, and it seems he'll be blessing yet another drill rep with a sweet R&B hook. Yesterday, Mih got in the studio with Chief Keef, and the session seems to have been manned by Chicago superproducer Yung Berg, who you might know from his extensive work on The Pinkprint.

Chief Keef and Lil Durk were two of the most prominent rappers in the drill scene when it first started to get some coverage a few years back. Both landed deals, and each has remained consistent in their creative out put since, but the two have drifted apart since the days of collaborating and appearing in one another's videos.

With the evolution of producer software, everyone can make beats on their computer. It doesn't take a lot of money or studio time to learn how to chop up samples, loop drum patterns, and create something great. And we're finding more and more beatmakers are making quality tracks.

Putting On For His City: Kanye West's Chicago Co-Signs

Although he once claimed to be "so Chi" that you thought he was bashful, Kanye West isn't frequently thought of as a quintessential Chicago rapper, with his global fame often overshadowing his ties to his hometown. Mr. West is unarguably the most popular rapper to ever come out of the Windy City, but the regional term "Chicago rap" is more likely to be associated with Common and No I.D., or even younger dudes like Chief Keef at this point.

Auto-tune was something of a taboo in rap, for some it may always be, but for the most part, it's been accepted as a common songwriting tool. As prevalent as it may be today, there was only on figure who can really be attributed with popularizing the effect, and that's T-Pain (sorry, Cher).

This week, Chief Keef caused a stir by releasing two tracks with Andy Milonakis, a comedian who'd formerly rapped alongside RiFF RAFF and Dirt Nasty in the group Three Loco. The man who came up as the poster boy for Chicago's violent drill scene was chilling out a bit and embracing humor with these tracks, or so it seemed. In actuality, the Milonakis co-sign was just the latest in a long line of unexpected and seemingly out-of-character moves by the dude born Keith Cozart.

GLOVO; it certainly has a nice ring to it, but is it the makings of a new bond between Drake and Chief Keef? Sosa just yesterday posted a photo to Instagram with a logo for the mysterious acronym, captioning the pic with "Thou Not Ready".

Chief Keef emerged from the almost cartoonishly violent streets of Chicago’s South Side in 2011, riding the crest of a grassroots, for-teens-by-teens movement that came to be known as “drill music.” Like all ascendant genres, drill (and, by extension, it’s superstar Keef) was met with a mix of traditionalist revulsion, outsider derision and early adopter over-adulation. The simplistic rhymes and aggressive beats left some folks shaking their heads and others nodding along.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".  This week, see who Chief Keef & Kanye West, Fabolous and Wiz Khalifa sampled on their recent tracks, all of which can be found on HNHH.

While Chief Keef never really stopped releasing loose tracks (don't sleep of his 2013 non-mixtape output), his recent departure from Interscope has meant a considerable increase in full length releases. With the largely self-produced Back From The Dead 2 dropping in October, to a number of releases (including his proposed sophomore record, Bang 3) planned for the next couple months, Keef has set himself an ambitious schedule.

Migos have been involved in a few altercations at shows recently, but things seem to have become more serious during their most recent appearance in DC.
