While SXSW started off as a showcase opportunity for rising artists all of genres, in recent years we've seen the rap genre take on a bigger influence at SXSW, not to mention, bigger artists as well. So, it may not come as a complete surprise that G.O.O.D. When used properly, ad-libs can really accelerate the popularity of an artist. Just ask Big Sean or 2 Chainz. These between-the-lines phrases are designed to hype up listeners, adding extra energy to their verses. Ad-libs tend to be funny, serious, or flat-out ridiculous. Recently, acts like Migos have taken ad-libs to the next level. While some rapper ad-libs can be annoying, there are those who've properly honed the ad-lib craft, and the result is usually entertaining. Ad-libs can also function as a tag or trademark for rappers-- the instant you hear one, you know who's on the track.

By now, the story of how Big Sean got signed to Kanye West is pretty familiar to the rap world-- Sean Don was working at a radio station in Detroit at the time, when 'Ye came through. Big Sean was encouraged by friends to spit a 16s for the rapper, and low and behold, Kanye thought it was dope. The rest, as they say, is history.

In the competition between the same-day release rappers Juicy J and Big Sean Juicy J appears to be taking the lead, although Sean debuted stronger than Juicy initially. Not to say they both haven't fallen quite a few spots-- they have. Will we see Juicy J remain stronger than Sean over a longer period of time?

This week Big Sean and Juicy J enter the Billboard 200, debuting one after another. Each rapper sold a respectable amount, however, it's nothing too crazy. Sean Don actually sold less than his debut album, although he promoted Hall Of Fame as better than his debut, perhaps the fans didn't care that much? They cared enough though-- he moved 72,000 units, which gave him a #3 debut.
