Samples Of The Week: April 24
Samples Of The Week: April 24 Apr 24, 2014 at 10:30am
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

Top Dawg Entertainment, or TDE for short, is one of the biggest success stories in hip-hop in recent memory. Founded in 2004 by Anthony Tiffith, the label didn't release its first mixtape until 2008, and its first album until 2010, but since then, has reached commercial and critical heights the likes of which most other independent labels couldn't imagine.

ScHoolboy Q Says "Druggys Wit Hoes Pt. 3" Will Drop Next Month Feb 26, 2014 at 06:02pm
ScHoolboy Q has kept the "Druggys Wit Hoes" theme going over the years, with the first collaboration with his Black Hippy counterpart Ab-Soul arriving on his Setbacks album, and then a second edition, "Druggys Wit Hoes Again", also featuring Soulo, appearing on his last LP Habits & Contradictions. However with the newest release, Oxymoron, we found no Ab-Soul nor "Druggys Wit Hoes" to be found.
Ab-Soul Hints At Joint Project With The Alchemist
Ab-Soul Hints At Joint Project With The Alchemist Jan 7, 2014 at 02:51pm
Earlier today we heard about collaborations between renowned producer The Alchemist and Slug of Atmosphere. The Alchemist is definitely one of the hardest working producers in the game, as it seems like he constantly has some project or another (or multiple) on his plate. It appears as though one of those projects is with Ab-Soul.
Ab-Soul Says He's "Turned In" Two New Projects
Ab-Soul Says He's "Turned In" Two New Projects Jan 3, 2014 at 12:55pm
Fans have been patiently awaiting a new Ab-Soul project since 2012's Control System, and while 2013 passed by without one, Ab may be making up for it by releasing two new efforts in the new year. The TDE rapper hinted at some new music on Twitter last night, saying "I turned in 2 projects last year, yea I know what your thinking, let's see where this year takes me...".

Ab-Soul Speaks On Learning From Jay Z & Nas, No Longer Writing Down Lyrics Nov 22, 2013 at 12:56pm
Ab-Soul's following continues to grow, despite his lack of releases since 2012's dense Control System. In an interview with the Miami New Times, Soulo explained why the project continues to gain him followers, as well as speaking on the blatant honesty that comes with refraining from writing rhymes down, and the knowledge he's been able to acquire through listening to hip hop alone. Read some excerpts from the sit-down below.
Review: Jhene Aiko's "Sail Out"
Review: Jhene Aiko's "Sail Out" Nov 17, 2013 at 03:18pm
Stunning. If Jhene Aiko wasn't already a household name, she ought to be by now. The 25-year-old singer has appeared on numerous hip-hop tracks throughout the year, most notably Drake's "From Time", J. Cole's "Sparks Will Fly", and Big Sean’s radio smash "Beware". Sail Out* is Jhene’s first major label EP, and what a debut it is. The seven-track Extended Play is smoked out, dreamy and romantic.
Ab-Soul & Jay Rock Speak On Their Similarities & Differences, Rapping For Fun
Ab-Soul & Jay Rock Speak On Their Similarities & Differences, Rapping For Fun Oct 30, 2013 at 02:02pm
While rolling in a pretty tight-knit crew, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock couldn't be more different. While Jay Rock favors mean-mug west-coast street rap, Soulo is known to create smoked-out, conspiracy theory-laden cuts. They've certainly learned a lot from one another however, detailing their dynamic in a new interview with XXL, as well as commenting on the concept of "rapping for fun," and their upcoming projects. Read some excerpts from the sit down below.

Ab-Soul & Joey Bada$$ Arrested In St. Louis [Update: Details Emerge, Joey & Ab Were Released] Oct 29, 2013 at 11:04am
After their performance in St. Louis Monday night for The Smokers Club Tour, Ab-Soul, Joey Badas$$, and a few members of the Pro Era crew were arrested. No official word on what the arrests were for, but it’s presumably marijuana related. Funny enough, it appears as if Joey doesn’t know what he’s hand cuffed for either. With the news hitting Instagram, Joey is seen in the clip below hysterically laughing as he asks the cop: “Have you figured out why I’m in these handcuffs? Have you figured it out? Yo, they don't know why I'm in these handcuffs.”
Underrated Audio October 19- October 25
Underrated Audio October 19- October 25 Oct 26, 2013 at 03:05pm
As November fast approaches, we're all getting excited to hear Eminem's come-back (we hope) on MMLPII on November 5th. However, October 15th was also an important day for hip-hop, with three of the most dope and underrated emcees all dropping records: Boldy James, Dom Kennedy, and Black Milk. Dom Kennedy is sort of making his way out of that underrated category, with Get Home Safely receiving (most) of the praise its due.

TDE Set To Drop New Music This Week Oct 20, 2013 at 10:56am
Last night, Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith announced via Twitter that he'd be dropping new material from the TDE camp this coming week. We'll apparently be hearing new music from Jay Rock and Ab-Soul, and it looks like a new music visual from ScHoolboy Q will be released as well. Last we heard was a remix of new signee Isaiah Rashad's "Shot You Down" single featuring Q and Rock.  That's all we have for now. Read Top Dawg's tweet below, and stay tuned for the new material. We've definitely looking forward to it.
