Top Tracks: September 19 - September 25
Last week's biggest news story continued to be The Game and Meek Mill's beef, which has now spiraled out to include accusations of ratting, an alleged brawl with Beanie Sigel, and
Vote: What Is The Greatest Black Hippy Posse Cut?
Black Hippy is the greatest rap collective this side of the Wu-Tang Clan. Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, & Ab-Soul each possess a unique skill set and temperament and are unstoppable when united. Black Hippy is the rap game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They have released numerous posse cuts over the years, albeit with increasing infrequency. Here are the 11 of the very best:
Lil Uzi Vert Calls Ab-Soul "One Of The Best Rappers"
A couple of days ago, Ab-Soul called out the new generation of "lil" rappers, seemingly implicating Lil Uzi Vert, as he then tweeted, "We don't pass on PRIMO beats in this sport kids!" He was likely referring to Uzi's refusal to rap over the beat to Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal" when asked to freestyle during a HOT 97 interview earlier this year.
SZA Suggests Her Debut Album Will Drop In November
Isaiah Rashad recently made a triumphant return with his official debut album, The Sun's Tirade, released almost three years after TDE put out his Cilvia Demo EP. Next up for the LA powerhouse is Ab-Soul and SZA, neither of whom have dropped a commercial project since 2014.
Ab-Soul Calls "New Lil" Rappers "Weak"
Ab-Soul isn't the first rapper in the game to take issue with some of his colleagues. We recently saw Pete Rock lay out his feelings about some of the new wave of artists, including Lil Yachty and fellow rappers that are heard to understand on wax. Yachty took it in stride (sorta), but now Ab-Soul has stepped in to also throw shade at this new generation of rappers, the same that Pete Rock was referencing.
Behind The Beat: Sounwave
“Mustard on the beat, ho!!!” “DJ Esco... The coolest DJ in the world!” *Repeats first beat of the song four times* “If young Metro don’t trust you, I’mma shoot you…”
TDE Confirms Ab-Soul's Album Is Finished, Jay Rock's 80% Complete
A few days ago, Isaiah Rashad, the lone Southern member of TDE, confirmed that his debut album -- the follow-up to 2014's Cilvia Demo EP -- will be the label's next project, set to drop on Sept. 2. After Rashad, the LA powerhouse will continue to churn out projects, as TDE President Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith revealed today that Ab-Soul recently turned in the final mixes for his next album.
TDE President Shares Mysterious Release Date
Earlier this year, TDE CEO Top Dawg suggested that at least 6 projects would be released by the label in 2016, one from each of its signees, as well as the possibility of music from two unnamed artists (one later revealed to be Lance Skiiiwalker). So far, TDE has dropped Kendrick Lamar's untitled, unmastered and ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP, meaning there's a whole lot more to come in the second half of the year.
Top Tracks: July 18 - July 24
Last week, Chance The Rapper, Big Sean, Future, and Mike Will Made It all found themselves victims of unauthorized leaks, and subsequently spoke out about the all-too-common occurrence in the music industry.
Top Tracks: July 11 - July 17
I'm not going to take the time to crunch all of the numbers for the 28 weeks of 2016 we've experienced thus far, but in terms of artists who show up most often in our weekly top ten tracks list, it's not even close. Drake is the clear victor, seeming to find a way on here every week. Second place is a little more murky.
Top Tracks: July 4 - July 10
Even on the very rare occasion that Drake doesn't show up in our top ten tracks of the week, his presence is still felt. In this case, he's directly responsible for three separate tracks in the top ten, whether that entails remixes or disses aimed at him.
ScHoolboy Q Speaks On Possibility Of Black Hippy Album
At the end of last week, ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP hit shelves and online retailers, somehow avoiding the constant threat of an internet leak.
Ab-Soul Disses Jay Electronica During Freestyle At Steez Day Festival
It’s safe to say Ab-Soul isn’t a big fan of Jay Electronica. On Thursday night, the TDE member took the stage at the second annual STEEZ Day Festival in Los Angeles to send a message and/or “shot” (if you can even call it that) at the Brooklyn rapper.
Vote: Who Had The Best Verse On The Black Hippy "THat Part" Remix?
Last night, ScHoolboy delivered not only his new album Blank Face LP, but a scintillating Black Hippy remix of his single "THat Part." The absence of a Black Hippy cut on the tracklist was troubling; fortunately, ScHoolboy remedied the situation for the fans.
ScHoolboy Q Suggests "THat Part" Black Hippy Remix Is In The Works
Tracks featuring Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, & Ab-Soul, the four members of Black Hippy, are always fire and increasingly rare. Which is why fans were so stoked to get a Black Hippy cut on Jay Rock's 90059 in the form of "Vice City" and so disappointed to see the absence of a Black Hippy cut on ScHoolboy's Blank Face LP tracklist.
Ab-Soul Announces Album "Tracclist Turned In"
TDE's crowded release schedule has been a source of frustration for Ab-Soul, who in February tweeted, "This bench is getting warm as fucc tho mayne." It has been a trying time for Ab-Soul and his fans alike, but all parties can now rejoice as the album appears to be basically done.
35 Artists To Follow On Snapchat
Snapchat is bigger than ever, and if you haven't been keeping up with it, you may not know just how many artists have hopped on board and created accounts. Of course, not everyone is as much of a natural as DJ Khaled, but there is a wide selection of musicians now active on Snap, and since they're still not that easily searchable within the app, we've decided to round up a few of the people we've been following.
Where Is Ab-Soul? Tracking His Movements Since "These Days..."
What's Ab-Soul been up to in the past two years?
A TDE Project Is Dropping One Random Night This Week
Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith is really not playing. He’s been taking heat from impatient fans and label signees alike over the past few months, as people are itching to hear more from his label’s powerhouse of artists.
Ab-Soul: "This Bench Is Getting Warm As Fuck"
Top Dawg Entertainment’s stable of emcees is one of the best in the game. However, it can be tough to keep everyone happy with so many mouths to feed, so to speak. Ab-Soul is the only artist of the bunch who hasn’t released a critically-acclaimed and widely promoted album. His last project, These Days… came out after ScHoolboy Q’s widely popular Oxymoron but it didn’t receive nearly same amount of promotion. The same goes for Jay Rock’s 90059 and any of Kendrick Lamar’s albums.
